Before it all begins…and the NYC snowstorm kicks in

An international media event for Samsung is taking place today. The topic: their new QLED televisions. As a quick refresher, QLED stands for quantum dots (QD), a technology that uses semiconductor nanocrystals to display monochromatic light, in red, blue and green.

One of Samsung’s smaller QLED TVs

What this all means is with Samsung’s usual display ingenuity and mastery, can implement high refresh rates, 4K resolution, HDR and a whole suite of “smart” features, like a gaming mode for the Xbox One consoles and Steam Link to stream PC games to the TV from any room.

Most of the televisions are suited towards large family or entertainment rooms, but there smaller versions suited for an apartment. Samsung is organizing the new TVs in tiers — Q6F, Q7F, Q8F and finally, the top-of-the-line Q9F.

Angles, it’s all about angles.

The lower-end Q6F comes in a 49" version, the Q7F starts at 55", while the top-tier Q9F starts at 65-inch screen size. What do the higher-end TVs get? Better HDR technologies and contrast on the Q7F, Q8F and Q9F models.

None of the new TVs have curved displays (flat is back), but all of them have the Bixby voice assistant, an Ambient screensaver mode based on a photo of the TV’s surroundings, Q HDR optimizations, the Universal Guide and remote control. The Q7F and Q9F also receive a one-cable wiring system, designed to reduce wire clutter.

These new TVs will debut in stores and online retailers starting this month, in March. Pricing is as follows for the 65-inch versions and one of the 75" TVs, as provided by Samsung.

  • 65" Q6FN costs $2,199
  • 75" Q6FN costs $3,499
  • 65" Q8FN costs $2,999
  • 65" Q7FN costs $2,599
  • 65" Q9FN costs $3,799

The rest of the 2018 QLED TV line’s pricing and availability are TBA.
