The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Windows Mobile 7 will indeed be launching at the Mobile World Congress 2010 on Monday. They have also confirmed that Steve Ballmer will head the show, and that WM7 will borrow a Zune-like UI, which would bring life and style to the aging and boring OS. As for the Project Pink, phones they will not make an appearance at MWC, and instead will be released sometime in Spring to replace the T-MObile Sidekick line. Windows Mobile 6.5.3 details exposed

With the launch of the Sony Ericsson Aspen (above), Winodws Mobile made a small leap to version 6.5.3. The latest version adds some much-needed features for Windows Mobile to even be able to compete with other mobile operating systems like Android 2.1 and iPhone OS 3.1.3:

  • Platform to enable multitouch
  • Touch controls throughout system (no need for stylus)
  • Consistent Navigation
  • Horizontal scroll bar replaces tabs (think settings>system>about screen)
  • Magnifier to bring touch support to legacy applications
  • Simplified out-of-box experience with fewer steps
  • Drag and drop icons on Start Screen
  • Browser page load time decreased and memory management improved
  • Browser pan & flick gestures smoothed and zoom & rotation speed increased
  • Updated runtime tools (.NET CF 3.5, SQL CE 3.1)
  • Arabic read/write document support
  • Watson (error reporting) improvements and bug fixes

So far, the Aspen is the only WinMo handset that has the latest release, and if we want to know more, we might just have to wait until Mobile World Congress in Barcelona kicks off.  Of course, there’s always hope of Windows Mobile 7, but let’s leave that for another time…. [Via BGR]

Sony Ericsson Aspen: Windows Mobile 6.5.3 Debut

What has people buzzing around the business-like Aspen is not its specs (far from the contrary): a full-QWERTY keypad, 2.4″ QVGA dispaly, 3.2 megapixel camera, 3.5mm headphone jack, microSD, Wi-Fi, A-GPS, support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and SPB Mobile Shell sitting on top of Windows Mobile 6.5.3. But it’s exactly that. Yes, it’s Windows Mobile 6.5.3 that has people buzzing, and what it brings. Microsoft has finally put in mind that fingers are the future on handsets, and now the UI is more finger-friendly — meaning no more crappy styluses. It also brings support for capacitive touchscreens (huzzah!), and can act as a platform to bring multitouch. As for radio bands, you’ll have quad-band GSM/EDGE with either HSPA 900/2100 or 850/900/2100 radios (depending on the region). Coming in Q2 of 2010.

As for the Aspen itself, it is part of Sony Ericsson’s GreenHeart portfolio; handsets that are eco-friendly. It comes in either black or white, and with things like the charger and the box being made out of eco-frendly material. One more slide and Sony Ericsson site link after the break.

HTC HD2 will get specs jump for US release

Looks like the HTC HD2 will get 1GB of ROM and 576 of RAM for its US release on T-Mobile, while the overseas model only has 512MB ROM and 448MB RAM. The US-bound model will also get a bigger storage card: 16GB instead of the quaint 2GB for the global model. You might think is perfect: a phone that you want will only get better once it comes out. Think again, carefully: according to speculation from not too long ago, Windows Mobile 7 requires more RAM and ROM. Exactly, the HD2 might get WM 7 at the Mobile World Conference next month. HTC Touch Pro2 gets Windows Mobile 6.5 on T-Mobile, Sprint waits for 6.6?
