New ExoPC details emerge into the wild west

In this episode of gadget blogging, the ExoPC tablet, the strongest threat to the HP Slate, which in turn is a threat to the iPad, has gotten something to talk about as of today. What’s new? Well, let’s start off with the 11.6-inch capacitive multitouch touchscreen with an output of 1366 x 768 pixels, a GPU powerful enough to watch videos in full-blown edge-to-edge screen format, an Atom CPU for multitasking in Windows 7 and for the app store coming on the unknown launch date, and last but not least, an SDK that supports Flash, Javascript, and HTML programming.

And for your security needs, this tablet won’t use plain-old, same-old Windows 7. Oh no, it has the ExoPC UI layer, to make it easier to use, much like the TouchSmart PC technology on the HP Slate. Good stuff, if you ask us. And it will have to be good, otherwise it’s not.

ASUS Eee PC 1201N Review

While most blogs go berserk (hello CTIA and HTC EVO 4G!) and write about upcoming Androids (which isn’t bad at all), we’ll take just a little bit of time today to bust a new review out the door. A prime showcase is the ASUS Eee PC 1201N. Complete with a dual-core Atom CPU, 12.1-inch panel, Windows 7 Home Premium, 2GB of RAM, and an island-style keyboard, there’s a lot to love here, especially the light weight. Windows 8 “mindblowing” and “completely different”. Really?

This week several Microsoft employees took it to their heads to talk about Windows 8, without actually talking about Windows 8 directly. The MSDN blog title was “Whats in store for the next Windows”. The reason why I said that in past tense is because Microsoft promptly took it down, but no worries:

“The minimum that folks can take for granted is that the next version will be something completely different from what folks usually expect of Windows – I am simply impressed with the process that Steven has setup to listen to our customers needs and wants and get a team together than can make it happen. To actually bring together dozens and dozens of teams across Microsoft to come up with a vision for Windows.next is a process that is surreal! The themes that have been floated truly reflect what people have been looking for years and it will change the way people think about PCs and the way they use them. It is the future of PCs…

John Mangelaars, Mirosoft’s Regional VP of Consumer and Online is quoted to have said “[Apple is] doing well on the PC side but Windows 7 is a blockbuster. We got it really right. For me, Windows 8 will be mind-blowing.” So the guys at microsoft are really pumped up about Windows 8! Even if this is just publicity or Windows Geniune Advantage, either way Windows 8 looks like something to be excited about, just like Windows 7.

HP Slate gets teased with a crystal clear video by CTO Phil McKinney

At CES earlier this month, Steve Ballmer showde off the Apple Tablet’s rival — the HP Slate. HP CTO Phil McKinney decided to share some details of the HP Slate, starting with how it was created 5 years ago as an e-reader, and then HP slowly but surely built up a “rich media experience” that most customers are after, he then said that now in a “perfect storm” of innovation HP has been able to create a multitouch tablet that is well priced and runs Windows 7. The HP Slate — Windows 7 And Minor Details

Another exciting event that occurred at the opening CES 2010 Microsoft Keynote is the unveiling of the HP Slate. Now mind you, that’s not the real name, but we’ll call it that for now. You might also notice that the Microsoft Courier is not here, and that it won’t be either.

As quoted by Steve Ballmer: “They’re more powerful than a phone and almost as powerful as a PC. Perfect for reading, surfing the web and taking entertainment on the go.” Besides knowing the fact that it runs Windows 7, has a touchscreen, is made by HP, and was demonstrated using the PC Kindle app, as well as a movie mode, ebook mode and PC mode, everything else about the “HP Slate” is pretty much in the dark. According to Ballmer himself the HP Slate will be coming this year, and HP says they will be providing more details after the keynote (which was last night). Lenovo Ideapad U1 Hybrid: Part Laptop, Part Tablet

Introducing the 3.8-pound IdeaPad U1 Hybrid. It’s a 11.6-inch laptop with a retractable multitouch screen. Pretty catchy huh? It has a  CULV Intel Core 2 Duo processor and Windows 7 Home Premium. But here’s the really “hybrid” part: When you pull the tablet out of the laptop’s chassis, a Qualcomm Snapdragon comes to life, thus creating a multitouch slate with a 16GB SSD that runs Lenovo’s Skylight Linux interface. Dual processors, dual OSes, and dual functions? This is the hybrid of all hybrids, and it’s coming in June for $999.

MSI X-Slim X600 First Impressions

The first laptop to arrive here at LaptopMemo is a slim one, or in other words, and Macbook Air look-alike. The MSI X600 is one slim, mean, powerful machine, with 1366 x 768 pixels gracing its very well-lit 15.6-inch screen. This review unit sent in by MSi is in all-clad black, with silver accents for the logos. Besides the well-lit glossy screen it packs in a 1.4 Ghz Intel ULV processor, Windows 7 Home Premium, 4 GB of RAM, a 500 GB hard drive, and an ATi Radeon HD 4330 graphics card, which so far can move its way through some (casual and sometimes demanding) games. It’s going to go through the rough and brutal multitasking tests I’ve come up for it, as well as battery tests, wireless tests, speed tests, etc. tests — you get the picture. But so far what I can say about it is:

  • It’s slim, hence the name.
  • When under heavy tasks the fan screams for air, and yet it still gets a little warm, mainly the handrests and touchpad.
  • The keyboard is very responsive, but the added numpad becomes a nuisance, in fact, while typing this post,  I’m hit numbers instead of words, which you might expect, can be distracting at work.
  • Lightweight isn’t the correct word when speaking of the weight in this thing, paper-like is more appropriate.
  • The trackpad supports glorious multitouch (and it works), but while that is a cool feature, the physical buttons take some reaching to get to, as they have a big dead zone, and only respond at the very end of each button.

More intriguing details from the xpPhone. And it doesn’t only run Windows XP. It runs Windows 7, too, and there are options to have it in 4.3, 4.8, and 7-inch versions. Windows 7, 5 MP camera, and dual GSM/CDMA are also available options. [Gizmodo]
