Mozilla: Don’t Forget About Us, Firefox 4 Launching March 22nd
by Stefan Etienne on 17. Mar, 2011 1:11AM in Apps, Internet, Web 2.0
In a land dominated by Chrome 10 and IE9 fresh out of the coding labs of both Google and Microsoft, respectively, comes Mozilla and its Firefox. To put it in my own wording, Mozilla doesn’t let us forget that Firefox 4 is coming, and that the Release Candidate 1 seems very bug-free, so a release is scheduled for March 22nd. Should any errors arise at the last minute, a Release Candidate 2 would be released and a new release date would be communicated with the community. In the meantime — wait till the 22nd for Firefox 4, if you are so inclined, or required. Via: Firefox 4 Release Announcement
Apple quietly announces Safari 5
by Stefan Etienne on 07. Jun, 2010 6:42PM in Apple, Apps, Internet, Mac OS X, Windows
This is interesting. A press release just got outed by Apple’s PR website, presenting the new release of the safari desktop browser, Safari 5. There’s a claimed 30 percent increase in speed, much like the iPhone 4′s version, and the debut of the Safari Reader. There’s also the ability to completely nuke Google search as the default option and choose Bing. Interesting. Press release below the break.
Safari 5 makes debut at WWDC with a boatload of HTML5?
by Stefan Etienne on 06. Jun, 2010 10:27AM in Apple, Apps, Internet, Rumors

According to French blog MacGeneration, Steve Jobs (and/or Apple) will make the Safari 5 announcement which is purportedly going to include the new Safari Reader, a 25% bump/jump in JavaScript performance, the option to make Bing the default search engine (an obvious sign of Jobs’ war on Google), 12+ new HTML5 features, newer developer tools, and hardware acceleration (yes?) for Windows. It could all be good, but I don’t see Safari giving Mac or Windows users the urge to switch to it from Google’s Chrome. Rightfully so, Chrome right now is untouchable. Firefox 4 who?

Google Chrome Kicks Butt. And Is Faster Than A Potato Cannon, Shows Google
by Stefan Etienne on 05. May, 2010 4:54PM in Apps, Google, Internet, Science

See, there are millions of YouTube videos uploaded each day to Google’s service, with 90% of them being utter crap, 5% are okay, and another 5% are worth watching. But Google has shown that they are the only ones worthy of their own video serving website. In a recent marketing video so wonderful it could make Verizon and the Droids cry, Google pits the latest beta version of Chrome against the following: a frickin’ potato cannon, lightning, and sound waves. I rightfully suggest you check out the best YouTube video of all time, after this line break.
Unconfirmed: Internet Explorer 9 with Windows Phone 7 Series-like UI the real deal?
by Stefan Etienne on 01. Apr, 2010 7:04PM in Apps, Internet, Microsoft, News, Rumors
Click to “embiggen”. You know, make it bigger.
It’s April Fool’s Day and that means the this report may have been thought to be legit, but in the end melts into a joke. That means you should be on your toes about now.
To start off, a Chinese site claims (as usual) that the above shot and the one after the break are both examples of the new Internet Explorer 9 UI. The back button for example borrows its cues directly from Windows Phone 7 Series, and the whole UI now looks reminiscent of it, too. It’s simple here: there’s pages/settings buttons, basic navigation buttons, a text-input bar (exactly like Chrome), and a variation of the whole show in blue instead of black. In fact, it looks like a WP7S mashup of Google’s Chrome. Disclaimer: This article was typed on Chrome, because it’s superior in terms of speed and looks.
Now we just have to ask ourselves, are the screenshots in this article made by some happy April fools in China? I could bet on that, but let’s keep it in limbo for now.

To The Readers: A word about IE8 and LaptopMemo (UPDATED: We’re Good!)
by Stefan Etienne on 05. Feb, 2010 11:00AM in Featured, Web 2.0
As far as my research can tell, IE8 is one of the most popular web browsers around. Who doesn’t know that? It also happens to be the one that doesn’t support proper web standards. And since LaptopMemo does, it looks, well, crappy. Chrome, Safari, and Firefox work like a dream on LaptopMemo, and because of that I will not be recoding the site for use on Internet Explorer 8 until a solution can be found. IE is nearly unusable, and if you try to use it, it’s a hopeless experience. So I would suggest you switch your browser, so that not only you can enjoy LaptopMemo to its fullest extent but other tech sites as well. Thanks.
UPDATE: Well, if you use IE8, you can tell that everything works now.
