Motorola DROID Android 2.2 Froyo Hands-On (video, pics!)

The Motorola Droid, a great handset (but will get its silicon heart kicked by the upcoming DROID 2) has one of its wildest dreams come true (or in other words, for its owners). Android 2.2 Froyo has made its way for those who know how to manually update an Android phone, which actually is a simple and harmless process. AndroidandMe gives a quick tutorial on how to get it done (note: you won’t need anything except your DROID, the update files, and some simple computer pwnage skillz).

Back to Android 2.2 on the Motorola Droid changes:

  • It’s much more responsive than Android 2.1 was, with UI improvements all around.
  • Orientation switching is supported on the right, a la iPhone 4, as is the usual left.
  • Adobe’s Flash 10.1 is present, available as an optional plug-in from the Android Market
  • Better multitouch, update-all in the Android Market, USB tethering, and a apps menu much like the 3D cube one found in the Nexus One, except it’s not as 3D as the Nexus One’s.
  • You can move apps to the SD card (!)
  • There’s also a more refined “currently running” apps screen (the one where you do multitasking), which now supports up to eight apps, making it 2 more than previous Android releases.

So all in all, this update is well worth and, and if you’re a Motorola Droid user (warning: NOT a Milestone owner, the overseas version of the Verizon DROID), then fell at ease to ditch your stale Eclair, and grab yourself some frozen yogurt (i.e Android 2.2).

Video after the break of the first boot is processing, but once it’s live, I’ll post it. Update: video is up!

Some Extra Clear DROID 2 Photos LEAK Out

So while the DROID X is having the time of its life right now, being cuddled by the execs at Verizon and consumers, the successor to the too-successful Motorola Droid is steaming along, and the photo above is the clearest photo we’ve seen of the handset yet. It’ll clearly run the nameless but MOTOBLUR-like UI, which is used by the DROID X.

The sleeker, more rounded out body design along with a re-arrangement of the touch capacitive buttons, is by far the only real changes the Droid 2, besides 8GB of internal memory, 512MB of RAM (twice the original’s) and finally the same 1GHz processing power as seen in the X. In fact, the Droid 2, which will retail for $199 on a 2-year contract, is every bit like the Droid X and Droid 1, except smaller (than the X), faster (than the 1), and has a slide-out QWERTY that knocks both out.

As for Android builds, the possibility of the Droid 2 coming with Android 2.1 then updating at the same time as the Droid X wouldn’t be surprising, but since there isn’t much to go by in that sector, I’ll leave it at that, folks.

Droid Incredible update will come blazing with FroYo, end of July/early August

According to the always-interesting and always yelling Andrew Munchbach (ask his Twitter pic), a perfectly-placed ninja, sent the following details, at the right moment, on time, so that the marvelous Internets may share the glory with you.

Ahem:

The Ninja: I wanted to pass along that the upcoming Incredible MR will also include Froyo (originally it was going to be two separate MRs).

We are targeting the end of the month/first part of August. As a reminder, below are the highlights:

  • Froyo
  • 802.11 n
  • 3G Mobile Hot Spot
  • HTC Widget: Email
  • HTC Widget: News
  • EAS Updates
  • 720p Video Recording
  • Amazon MP3
  • Skype
  • My Verizon

If this proves to be legit, it’ll be one of the darn best OTA updates in history, besides the iOS 4 update. Who am I kidding? It’s better.

Verizon DROID X is now on sale at Verizon’s site and stores

So if you’re craving a 1GHz processor, 4.3-inch multitouch WVGA screen, 8 megapixel camera with dual flash and 720p HD video recording (with a camera mic), 16GB of microSD storage with 8GB of internal, and finally a slick looking version of MOTOBLUR with Android 2.1 (FroYo coming quickly), then you’re in for a great surprise.

For the cost of 2 Benjamins and 2-year contract with Verizon Wireless. Then you’re done. Or you can wait in line like a maniac!

Motorola WX445 is Verizon’s answer to the mediocre Android phone

With all of those nice smartphone (ahem, superphones) out there, would you really buy something that’s sub-par (read: sucks)? In Engadget’s case, the source mentioned that it’s “cheaper looking” than a Palm Pre Plus, and is just “not a very impressive phone.” It has a small 2.5 to 3 inch screen, a terribly small 1170mAh battery, and lastly a flash-less camera with Android 2.1 and MOTOBLUR (possibly the DROID X’s version).

Pass?
