XPERIA X10 at the FCC, with its 40-page manual

image

Usually at the FCC, all new handsets and whatnot go to get pictured, dismantled, played with, picture it again, then play with it some more, waste time… but nevertheless some pretty good info comes out of those boring labs. The boring shot you see above is only a boring shot, but the 40-page user’s manual isn’t. That’s crawling with info, and I’d say if you want to buy the X10 (watch for thr Nexus One, mind you) you should take a look at your future instructions manual.

Nokia shows off new and improved Symbian 2010 OS

nokia-2010-symbian-600

As you may have heard, Nokia is going to release a new Symbian UI in 2010. But no, somehow they couldn’t wait to show off the screens, which is fine with me, and is why the concept shots are showing up here.

Nokia’s head in devices, Kai Öistämö, says that they plan to see Symbian OS as an interface, and not the problem. And they say they will:

“Use a new optimized graphic architecture with a focus on graphics and responsiveness, showcased beautifully on a large capacitive screen. Later in the year, a completely new visual architecture re-working of the UI will drastically reduce the complexity throughout and bring fresh appeal. We will execute here.”

Not a bad gameplan at all Mister Kai. Also, everything in Symbian 2010 is easier to use and do. Creating an email account takes 2 steps, not four, and it takes 2 taps to get your video and music, not 8. The web browser will also be more efficient.

Google is testing new search interface after all

google-new-ui

One lucky tipster at Gizmodo found this: the new Google UI in development. Strangely, Google is testing the interface on random computers, and this person happened to be one of them. It’s a cleaner, more modern UI, and would be a welcome change after so much time with the same old, same old. Click on the images for a larger view.

Microsoft Courier interface now explained better

11-04-09agenda

Pictures leaked to Gizmodo now explain the Microsoft Courier tablet in more detail than before. According to the pic above, the interface seems to be called “Smart Agenda”. Essentially, the tablet is like a journal that you can store info on; that info is searchable in the form of time, tags, and location. Other features include a ton of multitouch gestures and a special pen that has handwriting recognition, a digital eraser, as well as other things that could make the Courier one of the gadgets that is almost as exciting as the Apple Tablet. At the same time it could vanish just like the Apple Tablet could – Steve Ballmer, can you release this thing, please?
