That White iPhone 4 Of Yours Is Coming At The End of The Month, Says Jobs

So that hard make to make iPhone 4, eh? End of the month, in “limited quantities” Steve Jobs mentioned today at 4 Infinite Loop, California, where we were told all iPhone 4 owners get a free bumper case. By the way, I know what you’re thinking. eBay. Rare White iPhone 4. Sold.

So Here’s The Story: Steve Jobs Giving Out Free Bumper Cases For iPhone 4

So here’s the deal: free bumper cases for iPhone 4, Apple can’t produce enough of these things, so you’ll have to select between a variety of bumpers and cases, and you can apply online next week. Anyone who previously purchased an iPhone 4 bumper case gets refunded.

This is a hit to Apple’s coffers, but also a hit to the iPhone 4: in order for it to work, you need to put a colorful rubberband around it. Alas, at least it’s free.

I have a feeling everyone will have a bumper case around their iPhone 4 now. Albeit that’ll greatly annoy tech enthusiasts like me who find adding Chinese plastic to an expensive gadget distasteful. Oh well.

So here’s the deal:

  • If you already bought another bumper case, you get a refund.
  • The offer applies until September 30.
  • Have an iPhone 4 = bumper case free.

Oh, and white iPhone 4 ships at the end of the month. A full post about this will come on LaptopMemo later today.

AppleInsider: Here’s a US Senator’s letter to Steve Jobs about iPhone 4 “death grip”

The letter embedded after the break is 100% legit, according to AppleInsider, and is from New York Senator Charles Schumer (D) regarding the iPhone 4 death grip issue that has plagued almost everyone. The upcoming Friday press event might be about the antenna issue, but in the meantime, Schumer’s letter addressed to Steve Jobs is after the break, which has yet to be published officially.

Apple iOS 4.1 released to devs, offers signal bar ‘fix’ change

So in a whip of news in today’s cycle (I’ve been busy all day y’know, with other gadgets), iOS 4.1 just got the go to the official dev channels at Apple’s website (developer.apple.com), which brings plenty of bug fixes, the Game Center (which has yet to launch), and interestingly that “signal bar fix”, which falsely according to Apple at this point fixes the death grip issue. The trick here is that even a single bar of service doesn’t look so bad — due to all bars now being taller, as seen below. This won’t work on me, Steve Jobs and Cupertino! Via: BGR

That’s all I needed to tell you in the news tagline, didn’t I? As usual you’ll need Quicktime to view video on Apple’s website, so go fetch if you’re not already using Safari 5 (I’m not).

The Apple iPhone 4 Announced At WWDC 2010

Yeah,  yeah. This post came really late. I hear you guys. But anywho, let’s just move on the the show! At WWDC 2010, Steve jobs presented the new iPhone 4. Its desing is exactly the one seen several times before, and is packing a ton of new features, including the new iPhone OS name and branding: iOS 4. Yes, the name has changed.

The new specs of the just-announced iPhone 3GS’ successor are an Apple A4 (the same used in the iPad), with an Apple-rated battery life of 7 hours of 3G talk, 6 hours of 3G browsing, 10 hours of Wi-Fi, 10 of video, and 300 hours of standby time. Nice touch. On the new screen, the new iPhone 4 is 35% smaller than the 3GS, but packs in a “Retina display”. This 3.5-inch display has a resolution of 960×640 pixels, at 326 pixels per inch, which beats out any Android phone, the Nexus One and EVO 4G’s 800×480 pixel screens.  Rember that App Store issues that occured with the iPad? Well, the iPhone 4 has a 800:1 contrast ratio, meaning that apps will appear as they should, even with the new, high-res screen bracing the Retina display.

802.11n Wi-Fi is included as is quad-band HSDPA radio capable of 7.2Mbps down and 5.8Mbps up. There’s also a gyroscope coupled with the accelerometer for 6-axis motion sensing (read: extreme precision in movements with the phone. As for mics, the iPhone 4 packs dual-mic noise cancelling technology, much like the Nexus One.

The new camera(s) on the iPhone are astounding. The first, a 5 megapixel camera with 5x zoom, autofocus, and 720p video recording at 30fps, with a backside illuminated sensor which allows photons to crash into the sensor creating extremely well-lit low-light photos, meaning good ISO. The front-facing cam allows for Apple’s new FaceTime app, which allows for two-way video chat, but only over Wi-Fi while Cupertino is currently working on ways to get carriers to support the feature over their 3G networks.

Last but not least is the new Netflix app, which works exactly like the iPad’s, and the new iMovie app, which will retail for $4.99 on the App Store, which allows onboard 720p editing of your iPhone’s video. And lastly, the new iPhone 4 will be available in the US, UK, Germany, France, and Japan, and you’ll be able to pre-order it on June 15th and pick it up on the 24th. In the US, AT&T will sell the 16GB model for $199 and the 32GB model for $299 (both possibly a 2-year contract), in either full black, or full white.

Microsoft: Steve Ballmer NOT Showing Up At WWDC 2010

An analyst named Trip Chowdhry at Global Equities Research set off a fireball of rumors. That rumor was that Steve Ballmer would be speaking for exactly 7 minutes at the WWDC 2010 conference, which Steve Jobs can proudly label “iPhone Country”. An appearance by the CEO of Microsoft wouldn’t be so shocking, if it didn’t actually happen. And that’s what Microsoft just explained in a tweet: good ‘ol Ballmer isn’t showing up at WWDC. That settles that, uh?
