Soon, You Won’t Be Finding An AMOLED In Your Next HTC Phone

Good news everyone, and we have bad news everyone! No really. Due to the outstanding demand of all of the phones that HTC offers (namely the Droid Incredible, Nexus One) the stock of AMOLED screens is down to a point where the devices can’t be manufactured. Samsung produces those AMOLEDs, and they’re saving everything for the Galaxy S (which will be coming to the States as the Vibrant on T-Mobile and Captivate on AT&T). The Galaxy S requires Super AMOLEDs, so in this case Samsung will need all of its resources to produce the screens.

Thus, HTC will be switching many of its handsets to LCD variants. Whether or not they will be labeled as such remains to be seen, but it would be better for everyone if you knew that your next Android phone doesn’t have the AMOLED others have. The exact screens HTC will be installing will be Sony’s S-LCD (Super TFT LCD) which they claim uses less power, and higher resolutions, but with a lower contrast ratio.

On the flipside Samsung is shelling out 2 billion USD for a  plant which should open in July 2011. The new plant will produce AMOLEDs at 10-fold, so Samsung can almost make 30 million displays each month. Cool stuff are going around here, didn’t you know?

Playstation Move debuts at GDC 2010, starter kit under $100 with game, other options as well

The Playstation Arc as some of you might have known it, is officially the Playstation Move and has been debuted at GDC 2010. Sony’s calling it “the next generation of motion gaming” because of its extreme amount of control and the ability to be precise, latency is about on par with the Dualshock 3. It uses the Playstation Eye to track the Move, and additionally Sony says that this precision will not only allow casual gamers to engage themselves with their games, but creates a “new experiences for core gamers”. There will also be a “subcontroller” which has an analog stick, so you can completely play your way through shooters and SOCOM 4 which will support it. (Yes, it’s a wireless Wii Nunchuck. I get it, okay?)

You’ll be able to move with the Move (sorry with the pun) in three ways: fork over the cash as a standalone, a bundle with a PS3, or a starter kit that’s “under $100″ and includes the Move, Playstation Eye, and a game. That’s all the pricing that’s known for now, but it’s pretty good so far. The release will be Fall 2010.

Sony VAIO E-Series: Full of Color. Literally.

If you need some cheering up (or if you want to go colorblind), then boy, has Sony got the remedy for you! The new Sony VAIO E-Series seem to be the perfect laptop that’s “fashionable” without breaking the bank. Starting at $800 you get an Intel Core i3 CPU, 4GB of RAM, 500GB hard drive, HDMI out, Bluetooth, 15.5-inch screen, and Windows 7.

This base model starts shipping in March, but future models will have the option for a Core i5 processor, Blu-Ray, and up to 8GB RAM. All models feature a “WEB” button which allows you to open a web browser without booting into Windows itself. As for the color options, you should be satisfied: “five translucent, high-gloss colors— Caribbean Green, Iridescent Blue, Coconut White, Hibiscus Pink and Lava Black— and three matte colors—Maple Brown, Silver White and Gunmetal. Subtle patterns can be found on the lids, of the glossy models, with the palm rest mirroring the color of the PC adding a splash of brightness to the unit.”

So yeah, you can even color the keyboard to your color fantasy liking. The Core i3 models are for pre-order now, and the Core i5 ones will be revealed on February 7th. Battery life should be under 3 hours and weight under six pounds. PR after the break. [Via Electronista]

Sony VAIO Z Series: Core i7, 3.2 pounds, 4 SSDs, and 13.1 inches

Those are the main specs of the Sony VAIO Z Series coming to Europe in March. Meaning that sometimes after, the US should get it as well. This laptop is made out of carbon fiber. Carbon fiber! So it weighs only 3.2 pounds, and has a screen size of 13.1 inches, but can squeeze in a Core i7 CPU, and 4 SSDs in RAID 0 configuration. Oh, did I mention it had NVIDIA graphics and a 1920 x 1080 resolution? This is probably one of the most impressive designs in a computer for a long time. Although for all of this goodness, pricing is a concern, and there isn’t even one yet, but there are possible cheaper configurations in the shot after the break.

XPERIA X10 at the FCC, with its 40-page manual

image

Usually at the FCC, all new handsets and whatnot go to get pictured, dismantled, played with, picture it again, then play with it some more, waste time… but nevertheless some pretty good info comes out of those boring labs. The boring shot you see above is only a boring shot, but the 40-page user’s manual isn’t. That’s crawling with info, and I’d say if you want to buy the X10 (watch for thr Nexus One, mind you) you should take a look at your future instructions manual.

PlayStation Motion Controller was called Gem

image

In the world of executives slipping product names we have (at least) the codename for Sony’s Playstation Motion Controller. According to EA’s John Riccitiello, at the UBS 37th Annual Global Media Conference who spoke of Microsoft’s motion controller, Natal; in the same sentence he spoke of Sony’s motion controller — Gem. But according to Sony, “Gem” was the codename, and the actual name isn’t even in existence yet. But Gem wouldn’t be too bad, would it? Right.
