So Nook for PC has been brought to life again, while the iPhone and iPad versions also get new features. While the PC gets the least of the bunch, the iPhone and iPad app updates bring in tons of new goodies (themes, day / night content options, line spacing, font styles, preferred justification, previews, etc.), along with a load of other stuff not worth the extra writing time.
TIME FOR PLAN B!

Barnes & Noble already has BN eReader apps for both the iPad and iphone, which are in essence, NOOK apps. Starting today at the Android Market or http://www.bn.com/nookforandroid, the free NOOK for Android app allows for several type fonts, sizes, the lending feature found on the physical Nook eBook Reader, and you’ll need at least Android 1.6 for it to work, with a B&N account which will allow you to sync all of the books that you’ve been reading, even on the different platforms. PR after the “more” link.

Remember the Nook? You do? You should. Well, let’s cut to the chase and jump to the news. The Nook you used to know about retails for $199 (comes with 3G, remember?), and a new Wi-Fi only model announced today retails for $149. Before the original Nook retailed for $259, and the Wi-Fi one didn’t exist. Another nice bonus is that this Wi-Fi Nook is all white, completing its design in the process. Good work Barnes & Noble. Oh, one more thing! The new Nook 1.4 Android 1.6 firmware allows you to use AT&T Wi-Fi for free, anywhere.

After nearly 4 months of limbo, the DR 800SG from iREX is officially shipping out for the price of $399.99 from BestBuy.com. For those of you who were following gadget blogs properly, the DR 800SG was supposed to be the first e-book reader with access to the Barnes & Noble E-BookStore. Of course other readers like Barnes’ own Nook took that place. Press release after the break for those of you who are interested. Now we’ll finally be able to get our grummy paws on this thing for a review.

Just in time for Valentines Day, Barnes & Noble has gotten its manufacturing act back together. If you remember the numerous delays for the Nook, BN said things would be back to normal around now, and everything is. So if you have an extreme love of books (and gadgets), then the Nook is right up your alley. And as an added bonus, Barnes has started its exclusive “More In Store” content. When you do buy your Nook you’ll be presented with a short story by Adriana Trigiani, a red velvet cupcakes recipe by Anne Byrn, the Cake Mix Doctor, and finally a little something called “Read Between the Wines”, by wine expert Kevin Zraly, a dude who will tell you what to drink in terms of wine. PR after the jump, people.

Speed. That’s the main new feature in the new Nook v1.2 firmware update right now. Early reports suggest that the color touchscreen becomes more responsive and e-ink pages load faster. Unfortunately with the Nook, there isn’t a way too speed up the time that your Nook actually recognizes that there is a new update available, so you’ll have to wait until it says so.

Colorware, an online coloring, modding, (whatever) company that paints any popular gadget in every color and finish possible, has claimed two more gadgets as their victims — the Nexus One, and B&N’s Nook. Painting the Nexus One takes about 3 weeks, for $175, or if you’d like to buy it from them, you’ll pay a whopping $800. As for the Nook, pay $125 to get your custom paint job, or $400 for a brand-new one. It’s your call, basically. A shot of a colored Nexus One is after the break.

In the day of digital reading, you might expect that with the convenience of having all of your books wherever you go, there would be a side-effect. Well, there is one, and it’s not pretty. Above is a chart comparing all e-book sellers in terms of privacy. The Amazon Kindle for example, can track your every e-reading move; from buying the e-book to reading it. Sony and Google Books are on the “I Can See Everything You’re Doing” list, too. And with that, there goes another piece of your privacy: now companies can know what you read, when you read it. But I wonder: doesn’t this breach any privacy acts? Hmm. More info and a bigger chart at the “via” link.

If you are an unlucky Nook buyer, the kind that is getting the Nook in time for Christmas, you should be unspeakably mad when you hear this. Lucky buyers who ordered the Nook and aren’t getting it on the 24th get a free $100 B&N giftcard. Afterwards your delayed Nook would show up next year. Sounds nice if you ask me, but in the meantime feel sorry for the poor fellow that actually got their Nook for Christmas, then get yourself a cup of hot chocolate and laugh at him at the same time.

It’s official. The Nook has been rooted by some guys called the “NookDevs”. New features for the disgraced Nook include: Facebook and Twitter apps, as well as web browsing. Nice work. So essentially the Nook is now a web tablet, am I right?
