Leaked documents reveal Nokia Symbian X^3 QWERTY X10 slider

Before we go on with this report, I’d like to tell you that these “leaked release documents” could be 100% real or 100% fake. Now on to the report: these leaked docs purportedly show the outlines of the Symbian X^3-powered X10. The upcoming X-Series is believed to be a line of phones targeted at music and entertainment; a young audience. Rumored specs include an ARM Cortex A8 600MHz processor to power said device, 256MB of RAM, 32GB or 16GB of internal storage and a 3.2-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen. There’s also a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, HSDPA connectivity, Wi-Fi, aGPS, and the QWERTY keyboard. Still this could all be fake, but in order confirm your suspicions (or belief), I’d suggest you take a look at the YouTube video after the break with these “documents”. And as far as you can tell, I am extremely suspicious.

Symbian Source Code is now open for all, calling all devs

Today is a big day for the world’s largest but probably least recognized mobile operating system:  Nokia Symbian. Today the Symbian Foundation has opened up its source code, and it is available to anyone who pleases to do have access to it. Android finally has an open source counterpart that it can compete with. As for anyone who has a compatible device, Symbian can be installed on that device for free .Soon the team at Symbian Foundation will publish its platform roadmap and planned features up to 2011, and the notes can be expanded and edited based on how much devs contribute to the mobile OS. The full source code is now available at Symbian’s developer site link after the break.

Explained: Nokia Ovi Maps now available worldwide

You though Garmin and TomTom were in trouble with Google’s free Google Map Navigation app? Well, Nokia has announced that Nokia Ovi Maps will be available in 74 countries in 46 languages — which means Nokia could provide this free service that does not require a data connection to 20 million smartphones. Wow. It’s available on the N97 Mini, 5800 XpressMusic, 5800 navigation edition, E52, E55, E72, 5230, 6710 navigator, 6730 classic and X6. You can find out why after the break,  but in the meantime here’s the download link to Nokia Ovi Maps, and the other explanations and videos are after the cut.

It’s war: Apple countersues Nokia

image

Apple publicly announced that they’re suing Nokia over 13 different patents, 3 more than Nokia sued for when they went to court accusing Apple of copyright infringement.

And did I mention that Apple is also accusing Nokia of stealing? The fabulous punch-line:

“Other companies must compete with us by inventing their own technologies, not just by stealing ours.”

That statement was made by Bruce Sewell, Apple’s General Counsel and senior vice president. Hit the link for Apple’s press release and the filed court documents.

Nokia shows off new and improved Symbian 2010 OS

nokia-2010-symbian-600

As you may have heard, Nokia is going to release a new Symbian UI in 2010. But no, somehow they couldn’t wait to show off the screens, which is fine with me, and is why the concept shots are showing up here.

Nokia’s head in devices, Kai Öistämö, says that they plan to see Symbian OS as an interface, and not the problem. And they say they will:

“Use a new optimized graphic architecture with a focus on graphics and responsiveness, showcased beautifully on a large capacitive screen. Later in the year, a completely new visual architecture re-working of the UI will drastically reduce the complexity throughout and bring fresh appeal. We will execute here.”

Not a bad gameplan at all Mister Kai. Also, everything in Symbian 2010 is easier to use and do. Creating an email account takes 2 steps, not four, and it takes 2 taps to get your video and music, not 8. The web browser will also be more efficient.
