Nokia Officially Turns To Microsoft And Windows Phone 7

In a quick effort to get the derailing company on track (and have a face to deal with Apple and Google), Nokia has partnered with Microsoft to bring Windows Phone 7 to its handsets. Enhanced versions of Xbox Live, Ovi Maps combined with Bing Maps, and an enhanced Windows Phone 7 Marketplace will also be introduced. While all of this is going on, Nokia will have to move its developers to the WP7 platform and SDK (read: something extremely difficult with no Qt supports for devs), therefore we don’t know how long it will take to have Nokia Windows Phone 7 hardware. Also, Nokia has full customization of the platform, but according to themselves, they won’t likely make any massive changes.

As Nokia CEO Stephen Elop put it: “Today, developers, operators and consumers want compelling mobile products, which include not only the device, but the software, services, applications and customer support that make a great experience,” and that “Nokia and Microsoft will combine our strengths to deliver an ecosystem with unrivalled global reach and scale. It’s now a three-horse race.” We’ll see about that, Finnish dude. Via: Nokia

One Of Our Favorite PR Buddies Is Leaving Nokia

This guy was awesome. His name is Joseph Gallo and a great agent to have. Of course like all things that must end, he’s ending his job at Nokia PR effective on December 30th. He also seemed pretty bummed too, see here:

Unfortunately, this means I won’t be able to grab drinks with everyone at CES as I won’t be going this year.

You can follow him on Twitter as @jgallo02. Good luck Joe!

Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition Review

With contenders like Google Maps Navigation, most navigation apps used on smartphones like the iPhone are utterly blown away. Nokia on the other hand, so far is the only manufacturer with a navigation system on par or a little better than Google Maps. The Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition is actually a 5800 XpressMusic, which in turn was pretty much was a music player. The main difference between the two is that this, as according to its name, is a navigation phone that can be used on either T-Mobile or AT&T networks. Check out our thoughts after the cut.

Nokia N8 is official, becomes Nokia’s flagship, ships Q3

So while BlackBerry makers fly with new handsets and a new OS, Nokia, the world’s largest and most popular handset maker couldn’t just stand by, could they? That’s right. They’ve officially debuted the N8, which packs in a 3.5 OLED capacitive touchscreen, HDMI output (yay!), 16GB of internal storage, a microSD expansion slot, 720p HD video recording (yay!), and of course the new Symbian^3. But the cost of all of this seems to be unsubsidized, and only in Europe; US availability hasn’t been confirmed yet. But anyways, this shiny new phone should set you back at about €370 ($494 USD) and should launch in Q3 2010. And did we mention early Russian reviews for it are not in the green right now? Something has to turn up for Nokia…

Nokia N8-00 makes a leaked debut

The Nokia N8-00 is a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen smartphone with 720p video recording on its 12 megapixel camera, set to become Nokia’s flagship handset.

It runs Symbian ^3 and a Chinese site has all of the photos of it. Besides that, the only thing it doesn’t have is a US release date. Otherwise, this leaked news post is pretty much useless. On to CTIA and the Supersonic in Las Vegas!

Skype Arrives At The Nokia Ovi Store

While Skype for Windows Mobile is technically gone, Skype for Symbian^1 and up is now available on the Nokia Ovi Store. The app allows users to place free phone calls to other Skype users over Wi-Fi, 3G, and even EDGE. As Skype’s mobile GM Russell Shaw said, “With Skype for Nokia smartphones, more than 200 million smartphone users worldwide will be able to take the Skype features they love with them on the move.”

And it’s free, so if you’re one of the lucky few to own a Symbian^1 and up handset, now is the time to get the free app on your app store.

HTC HD2, CLIQ XT, and Nokia Nuron get their pricing?

Look! Windows Mobile and the HTC HD2 on T-Mobile! Okay, you know that already, but would you really want to buy an awesome phone, but with a doomed operating system? Just asking. According to TmoNews the HTC HD2 will be priced at $199 on a 2-year contract or $449 without a contract. The $199 pricing for the HD2 will probably require you to get a shiny new data plan. Otherwise, the Nokia Nuron is $69.99 after rebate, and $179.99 without a commitment. And lastly the Motorola CLIQ XT, arguably the most questionable of all of Motorola’s handsets (in my opinion because of its looks), will retail for $129 with a 2-year contract and $329 contract free on T-Mobile. So what do you think? Will any of you jump in for say, the CLIQ XT or the HD2?

Apple Sues HTC for Infringing Over 20 iPhone Patents UPDATE

Apple is suing HTC for over 20 patents “related to the iPhone’s user interface, underlying architecture and hardware.” After Apple sued Nokia, you though all was over, right? Wrong. And some of the charges are unbelievable. One of them is unlock gestures on an unlock screen. That would cover every single smartphone right now on the market. Apple is asking for a permant injuction wohich would bar HTC from selling its phones here in the U.S. The entire filing and press release is embedded for you after the break.

And guess what? There’s comment from Steve Jobs on this too:

“We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it. We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.”

UPDATE: It looks like HTC didn’t even know of the case against them and have not even seen the lawsuit for themselves. Here’s their comment:

We only learned of Apple’s actions based on your stories and Apple’s press release. We have not been served yet so we are in no position to comment on the claims. We respect and value patent rights but we are committed to defending our own innovations. We have been innovating and patenting our own technology for 13 years.

So far it seems that HTC is pretty confident. Giz and All Things D are really the only other blogs with the docs right now, since they’re not even in the court system yet. Once they do come out and are published for all to see, we’ll know exactly what Cupertino and Steve are actually suing for.

UPDATE 2: And here’s the lawsuit.

Apple vs HTC

Essentially it’s the same type of lawsuit file against Nokia, and almost the same nasty comments on Palm, but which haven’t led Apple to sue them (yet). We’ll update this post as soon as we learn what exactly Apple sued HTC for.
