New Motorola DROID Froyo FRG83D Update Inbound

Not much news over here. The Motorola Droid — grandfather Droid/old Droid/Droid 1/Whatever — has a new update inbound for Android 2.2. New features include the new Gmail app, updated Twitter app, Microsoft Exchange improvements, updated News & Weather widget from stock Android, and a few other things of that sort. Expect the OTA to be floating to your handset any moment now. Via: VZW (PDF)

Motorola DROID Android 2.2 Froyo Hands-On (video, pics!)

The Motorola Droid, a great handset (but will get its silicon heart kicked by the upcoming DROID 2) has one of its wildest dreams come true (or in other words, for its owners). Android 2.2 Froyo has made its way for those who know how to manually update an Android phone, which actually is a simple and harmless process. AndroidandMe gives a quick tutorial on how to get it done (note: you won’t need anything except your DROID, the update files, and some simple computer pwnage skillz).

Android 2.2 Froyo on Motorola Droid Gallery (pardon me for the sucky lighting)

Back to Android 2.2 on the Motorola Droid changes:

  • It’s much more responsive than Android 2.1 was, with UI improvements all around.
  • Orientation switching is supported on the right, a la iPhone 4, as is the usual left.
  • Adobe’s Flash 10.1 is present, available as an optional plug-in from the Android Market
  • Better multitouch, update-all in the Android Market, USB tethering, and a apps menu much like the 3D cube one found in the Nexus One, except it’s not as 3D as the Nexus One’s.
  • You can move apps to the SD card (!)
  • There’s also a more refined “currently running” apps screen (the one where you do multitasking), which now supports up to eight apps, making it 2 more than previous Android releases.

So all in all, this update is well worth and, and if you’re a Motorola Droid user (warning: NOT a Milestone owner, the overseas version of the Verizon DROID), then fell at ease to ditch your stale Eclair, and grab yourself some frozen yogurt (i.e Android 2.2).

Video after the break of the first boot is processing, but once it’s live, I’ll post it. Update: video is up!

Motorola DROID doesn’t have the hardware for Froyo’s mobile hotspot, eh?

According to Verizon Wireless spokesperson Brenda Raney (a friendly agent of mine), while speaking to Engadget, the original Motorola DROID “doesn’t have [the] hardware to support the mobile hotspot.” Now let’s rewind:

All Droid owners starting this week (even right now), will be getting the OTA for Android 2.2, and while one of the core features is in fact, mobile hotspot, the Droid won’t support it. Or in Verizon’s eyes, can’t.

Oh well. Now, if you’ll excuse us, please drop us a tip on our tips line if you have the update.zip file that can bring FroYo to the Droid masses (that also means us).

Verizon Releases Details On Motorola Droid Android 2.2 Update

Verizon and Motorola, keen on bringing Android 2.2 to the original Droid, has already posted instructions for the update on Verizon’s website. On the flipside, I’ve gotten a hold of these documents from a great ninja, above being the first page. Some users will receive the update tonight, and then it will officially roll-out in the following days.

Android 2.2 Motorola Droid OTA coming up next week

The more Froyo, the merrier, right? Whilst Sprint will be the first carrier to offer Android 2.2 on a handset this summer, it looks like “official word” (though not seen) sent to the old guys at Engadget claims the Verizon will begin pushing out Froyo next week, to the first Droid. Other Droid variants weren’t spoken of, but probably that’ll come up later.

Some Extra Clear DROID 2 Photos LEAK Out

So while the DROID X is having the time of its life right now, being cuddled by the execs at Verizon and consumers, the successor to the too-successful Motorola Droid is steaming along, and the photo above is the clearest photo we’ve seen of the handset yet. It’ll clearly run the nameless but MOTOBLUR-like UI, which is used by the DROID X.

The sleeker, more rounded out body design along with a re-arrangement of the touch capacitive buttons, is by far the only real changes the Droid 2, besides 8GB of internal memory, 512MB of RAM (twice the original’s) and finally the same 1GHz processing power as seen in the X. In fact, the Droid 2, which will retail for $199 on a 2-year contract, is every bit like the Droid X and Droid 1, except smaller (than the X), faster (than the 1), and has a slide-out QWERTY that knocks both out.

As for Android builds, the possibility of the Droid 2 coming with Android 2.1 then updating at the same time as the Droid X wouldn’t be surprising, but since there isn’t much to go by in that sector, I’ll leave it at that, folks.

Motorola DROID Review: A Look Back At The First Droid

The Motorola Droid is going to be succeeded. We know it is. Motorola does, as do Verizon and Adobe (look at Moto’s and VZW’s sites). And hence, the original Droid that so many millions own will be out of date, until its FroYo 2.2 update nears. In fact, the official announcement of “the next generation of Droid” is tomorrow, so let’s go over a quick look at what the Droid was, and what it truely is.

Motorola Droid 2 Gets Previewed: The Droid You Are Looking For?

All have to say is that the group of tech bloggers by the name of something-something AndroidandMe deserve a standing ovation of a Motorola Droid 2 hands-on, which goes head-to-head with the original Droid (which just arrived in the review unit office of LaptopMemo and is being cursed at for its fate of being superseded by new Droids). Site back, relax, and enjoy! And don’t forget to look at our shiny new sponsor in the sidebar – BT Telecommunications, one of the largest phone companies in the frickin’ world.
