Bill Gates on the iPad: It’s a “Nice Reader”; Disney CEO “Game Changer”

Bill Gates ‘ take on the iPad is well, meh. While Steve Jobs thinks netbooks are good at nothing, our good buddy Gates thinks exactly otherwise:

“You know, I’m a big believer in touch and digital reading, but I still think that some mixture of voice, the pen and a real keyboard -- in other words a netbook -- will be the mainstream on that.”

He goes on to say that the iPad is a “nice reader” but not another product or idea that makes him wish that Microsoft had done it first, say the iPhone. But as for Disney CEO Robert Iger, he brings out that dreaded word “game changer” and says that the iPad will bring “essentially new forms of content.” may we not forget that Steve serves on the Disney board, so this could just be a courtesy call. Either way, Disney could come up with some day I say “game changing” ideas that could possibly make Gates envy the iPad. So now, ultrathin sleek tablets, or fast small and nimble netbooks — what say of you, sir?

To The Readers: A word about IE8 and LaptopMemo (UPDATED: We’re Good!)

As far as my research can tell, IE8 is one of the most popular web browsers around. Who doesn’t know that? It also happens to be the one that doesn’t support proper web standards. And since LaptopMemo does, it looks, well, crappy. Chrome, Safari, and Firefox work like a dream on LaptopMemo, and because of that I will not be recoding the site for use on Internet Explorer 8 until a solution can be found. IE is nearly unusable, and if you try to use it, it’s a hopeless experience. So I would suggest you switch your browser, so that not only you can enjoy LaptopMemo to its fullest extent but other tech sites as well. Thanks.

UPDATE: Well, if you use IE8, you can tell that everything works now.

Zune Phone uncovered in line of code in Zune software update?

With Mobile World Conference edging closer everyday, and evidence of Windows Mobile 7 creeping up on the blogs, a recent Zune software update (today) revealed the Zune.ini file, a file that associates hardware devices with the Zune driver, and inside of that file, 3 lines of code with the word “Phone” with vendor IDs and products IDs are locked to Microsoft. Almost every blog’s guess is that if the word “Phone” appears in a driver file for Zune devices, then a “Zune Phone” is coming? It could also be a Zune integration into a Project Pink phone, but who really knows? It’s a compelling find, isn’t it?

HTC Touch Pro2 gets Windows Mobile 6.5 on T-Mobile, Sprint waits for 6.6?

Ahead of schedule (January 20th) T-Mobile has given the go to Windows Mobile 6.5, allowing HTC Touch Pro2 users to download the latest version of Microsoft’s mobile phone operating system via T-Mo’s website once you access the phone’s IMEI. So far the only network that is not giving 6.5 to its customers is Sprint, but according to a statement made by Sprint, “significant enhancements to the Touch Pro2 user interface which will allow additional customization / personalization options and more integration with the applications users access most.” Probably meaning they’ll get Windows Mobile 6.6, due at MWC next month.

Microsoft hiring Xbox LIVE manager for Windows Mobile

Bringing Xbox LIVE to Windows Mobile handsets has always been a dream of well — Windows Mobile users. And a recent available job position at Microsoft might be all the confirmation we might need. Microsoft is currently looking for a Principle Program Manager to “bring Xbox LIVE enabled games to Windows Mobile” and is someone who “will focus specifically on what makes gaming experiences “LIVE Enabled” through aspects such as avatar integration, social interactions, and multi-screen experiences”. This obviously means that Xbox LIVE is headed to Windows Mobile, and this might even be Microsoft’s savior for Windows Mobile.

Microsoft now forced to stop selling Word by Jan 11

image

For those of you who were following this waayyy back in May, Microsoft appealed in a patent infringement case against i4i, a 30-personnel Canadian company. The cause of the case was that certain XML tags were used in both Word 2003 and 2007 without i4i’s consent. You can tell where this is going: Steve Ballmer is going to start practicing how to sign bigger checks. As for continuing sales with Word 2003 and 2007, Microsoft will no longer be allowed to put them on store shelves on January 11. The good news is: one, OpenOffice users have nothing to worry about, and two, the beta version of Office 2010 and full version of Office 2010 won’t have any worries either.

DECAF can beat Microsoft’s COFEE

image

This was going to eventually happen. It comes to show how interesting the tech world is; you create a top secret password destruction tool for the goverment, then it gets leaked out onto the Web, and then to fight against it, you’re hit by some DECAF created by even more hackers.

I’m talking about Microsoft COFEE, the god-like bypass program for goverments. Recently smart hackers have gotten their paws on COFEE, and distrubuted it. But now, another group of hackers have created DECAF, the also god-like password blocking program, which can beat every one of COFEE’s moves, making it as light as --uh-- decaf.
