The Alienware M11x is one heck of a beast. It grunts, runs, and speaks Alien(ware). After getting it from our local friendly FedexMan a day before my trip to New York for pre-SSAT math preparation with Dad, and some sightseeing, I was able to pull off as many tests needed to say one thing: it’s awesome. Just two days before Earth Day, Lenovo has released the new L series, aimed at being very, very eco-friendly. Starting striaght off the bat with specs — as always — an entry-level model starts at $649 and gets you a Celeron P4500 CPU, 160GB hard drive and 1GB of RAM. You can upgrade the 14-inch L412 and 15-inch L512 with a Core i3 or Core i5 processor, ATI Radeon HD 5145 graphics, up to 8GB DDR3 RAM, a 500 GB HDD, has 4 USB ports, a 7-in-1 card reader, and purported battery life of up to 10 hours on a 6-cell battery. The only main drawbacks here are weight: 5.22 lbs is the L412 and the L512 adds an extra half pound on top of that. Finally! Jumping the gun and going straight to the news: the Macbook Pro line has been refreshed featuring Core i5 and Core i5 processors. The basic Macbook Pro 13-inch comes with 4GB of RAM, 320GB, and a 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo processor, but the 15-inch and 17-inch models are Core i5 and Core i7 for the record. Also, the higher-end models grab the Nvidia GeForce GT 330M graphics with Optimus switching, meaning that web browsing will be the lightest load of all time, and graphics speed will only be called in when you actually need it. While the 2.4Ghz and 2.66 Ghz Core 2 Duos with a claimed 10 hours of battery life in the 13-inch model definitely are to impress (hey, no Core i5 in the 13?), it’s the 15-inch and 17-inch ones that really count: Core i5 2.4GHz (520M), Core i5 2.53GHz (540M), and Core i7 2.66GHz (620M) processors come in the larger models, as well as the faster Nvidia 330M instead of the 13-inchers 320M. Also, Apple claims that you’ll get between 8 and 9 hours of battery life on these bad guys.
All models come with 4GB of sweet DDR3 RAM, 320GB hard drives and 500GB in higher-end ones, you have the stellar and tempting option of a 512GB SSD for $1,300. So to shoot it all down, the 15-incher gets the Core i7 and the 17-inch gets the Core i5. But let’s go to what this will all cost you, right? It’s $1,799 for the 15, $2,299 for the 17, and $1,199 for the 13. And Apple’s not done with you yet: a 1440 x 900 “glossy” display comes basic on the 15, a 1680 x 1050 glossy display goes for $100 more, and an anti-glare hi-res display for another $50 on top of that (making it $150 for a matte display). Everything’s up at the Apple Store with a shipping date of “24 hours” while the 13-inch model is delayed “2-4 days”. Awesome stuff, if you ask us. (Sans not having Core i5 in the 13, but still a great refresh).

Dell has numerous product lines in terms of portable computers. You have the Studio line, Studio XPS, Mini, Alienware, and the consumer pocket-friendly Inspiron. The Dell Inspiron 15 is not a new runner on the block, but the newly improved and better spec’d Inspiron 15 with a Core i5 Intel processor is something new. And it’s fast. For the price of $969, this is a pretty good deal for a Windows 7 Core i5-powered laptop. While most blogs go berserk (hello CTIA and HTC EVO 4G!) and write about upcoming Androids (which isn’t bad at all), we’ll take just a little bit of time today to bust a new review out the door. A prime showcase is the ASUS Eee PC 1201N. Complete with a dual-core Atom CPU, 12.1-inch panel, Windows 7 Home Premium, 2GB of RAM, and an island-style keyboard, there’s a lot to love here, especially the light weight. No real offense here to the business minded HP ProBook-s series, but hey, it’s only now that things got interesting. HP is releasing different models, beginning with the 13.3-inch 4320s to 15.6-inches and even a heavier-duty 17.3-inch 4720s. The y introduce Core i3/i5/i7 processors to the family, so there’s a lot of power to be used here. Other configuration options include the $900 15.6-inch ProBook 4520s with a Core i5 CPU and a 500GB 7,200RPM hard drive, which seems like one of the good deals here that I could take for myself. And if you’re into a little gaming, have no fear, because you can get ATI’s Mobility Radeon HD 5350 GPU on any of the new laptops. As for colors they come in a “caviar” brown or a reddish “bordeaux” which are both matte. Other new snazzy stuff HP throws in is the ClickPad and HP’s exclusive Day Starter software, which lets you look at your Outlook calendar while your PC is booting up. Apparently Professor Mullen of Physics at the University of Oklahoma isn’t a fan of gadgets, nor is he of computers. And yet computers help in the discovery of many things in physics, as well as vice versa. Moving on, our dear professor took a bricked laptop, gave it a bath in liquid nitrogen, and then smashed it against the floor. Yet somehow a student near the front row was allowed to have a camera to tape the comedy. But my reasons for posting this is not because I wanted to show you a lunatic professor. No. My question here is this: Should computers be allowed in the classroom as long as the students actually using them to be productive? Oh, and of course the video that might make your day is after the break. Literally.
