Dell Mini 5 to be first of “family of tablets”

A great thing to know indeed. While we are patiently waiting for the Dell Mini 5 to launch (even though we don’t know when) Dell’s very own Neeraj Choubey, GM of Dell’s tablet division, served up the scoop to Wired and said that there will be “a family of tablets” which will “scale up to a variety of sizes.” (They probably would all run Android) He also reveals that there will be “inexpensive data plans” with the new slates, much like what Apple plans for the iPad. Although I do think a lot of carriers are going to get a grudge when they have to provide “cheap” data plans to a large range of users. The buck doesn’t stop there though; the exec had a separate interview at Laptop, and said AT&T would be providing that coverage to Dell Mini 5 users. Who knew? Now Choubey, wanna give us that release date?

MSI X-Slim X600 First Impressions

The first laptop to arrive here at LaptopMemo is a slim one, or in other words, and Macbook Air look-alike. The MSI X600 is one slim, mean, powerful machine, with 1366 x 768 pixels gracing its very well-lit 15.6-inch screen. This review unit sent in by MSi is in all-clad black, with silver accents for the logos. Besides the well-lit glossy screen it packs in a 1.4 Ghz Intel ULV processor, Windows 7 Home Premium, 4 GB of RAM, a 500 GB hard drive, and an ATi Radeon HD 4330 graphics card, which so far can move its way through some (casual and sometimes demanding) games. It’s going to go through the rough and brutal multitasking tests I’ve come up for it, as well as battery tests, wireless tests, speed tests, etc. tests — you get the picture. But so far what I can say about it is:

  • It’s slim, hence the name.
  • When under heavy tasks the fan screams for air, and yet it still gets a little warm, mainly the handrests and touchpad.
  • The keyboard is very responsive, but the added numpad becomes a nuisance, in fact, while typing this post,  I’m hit numbers instead of words, which you might expect, can be distracting at work.
  • Lightweight isn’t the correct word when speaking of the weight in this thing, paper-like is more appropriate.
  • The trackpad supports glorious multitouch (and it works), but while that is a cool feature, the physical buttons take some reaching to get to, as they have a big dead zone, and only respond at the very end of each button.

So for the meantime enjoy the gallery (new gallery in testing I might add) after the jump, and expect a full review soon, as well as the new “Did you Know” and “Opinion” sections which will come around at the same time.

Israeli airport security shoots laptop — for no reason

image

Talk about Israel acting like a bully. Young traveler heads to Jerusalem, gets questioned, then waits and hears gunfire, which hit her 13-inch Macbook Pro. Fortunately she was able to retreive her hard drive, and is currently being told she will be compensated. According to airport security, it was “suspicous passenger luggage” that they were shooting. Here’s a tip by the way: Backup your data and be careful with your laptop in Israel. Blockquote and more destruction pics after the break.

Ah. The Studio XPS series from Dell. The high end line of Dell laptop which are so powerful, so good looking, so Dell??! Anyway, first they had it in black, then in red, now in white. So it now matches your hat, though probably costs more, at 40 bucks, though for the same price you could get some more RAM, ah what the heck, take the white!

Now Dell, listen up: Lets have those Studio XPS laptops in electric green, okay?

Dell Latitude Z leaked @ NotebookReview

dell-z-series-laptop-rm-eng This looks like a proper leak on a new laptop from Dell. It’s believied to be called the Dell Latitude Z, the shots come from NotebookReview.com

Very thin, has no CD drive, and looks like a cross between the new Studio 14z and Dell Adamo. Has a fingerprint reader and an Ethernet port on the back. It’s confirmed that it has a Core 2 Duo Centrino processor, 15″ matte screen, and a camera with facial recognition.
