Apple’s iPad Goes To Two Million Units Sold

Remember when 1 million iPads were sold, even though it wasn’t available overseas yet? Well then, the iPad has gone to 2 million units sold internationally, in only 59 days. That’s — incredible!? Note that the number includes both 3G and Wi-Fi only models; but who gives a straw about that part?

Press release below:

CUPERTINO, Calif., May 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Apple® today announced that iPad™ sales have topped two million in less than 60 days since its launch on April 3. Apple began shipping iPad in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK this past weekend. iPad will be available in nine more countries in July and additional countries later this year.

“Customers around the world are experiencing the magic of iPad, and seem to be loving it as much as we do,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We appreciate their patience, and are working hard to build enough iPads for everyone.”

iPad allows users to connect with their apps, content and the Internet in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before. Users can browse the web, read and send email, enjoy and share photos, watch HD videos, listen to music, play games, read ebooks and much more, all using iPad’s revolutionary Multi-Touch™ user interface. iPad is 0.5 inches thin and weighs just 1.5 pounds-thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook-and delivers up to 10 hours of battery life.*

Developers have created over 5,000 exciting new apps for iPad that take advantage of its Multi-Touch user interface, large screen and high-quality graphics. iPad will run almost all of the more than 200,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for your iPhone® or iPod touch®.

*Battery life depends on device settings, usage and other factors. Actual results vary.

iPhone OS 4.0 Beta 3 Released To Developers…Then Gets Pulled. So Yeah, That’s It

So yeah, iPhone OS 4.0 Beta 3 got released to paying iPhone developers, then got pulled. And that’s pretty much the whole report right there; we don’t have any idea how this happened, and why, but we do know that something very interesting would be happening if that just pulled it off the server like that. And there’s the end of this not-so-professional post. Hope you like it, cheers.

Column: The iPad Launches, And You Probably Have One. Right? No? You Should.

You couldn’t possibly be a reader of this site and not like gadgets, could you? Or more particularly the iPad, despite missing features that we all expected, still is the pinnacle of what a tablet computer can be.  For the most part, reviewers have given their thumbs up to the iPad, while yours truly will be demoing one soon.  And from the looks of it, many people already own an iPad, and most anger over its “missing features” have completely subsided. They finally learned their lesson.

In the initial launch, which was U.S only earlier today, people seem to be in outright joy over owning their new shiny gadgets, with the likes of Joshua Topolsky of Engadget, Boy Genius of BGR, John Biggs at CrunchGear, Matt Buchanan of Gizmodo and seemingly the always-funny (hold that thought!) John Gruber at Daring Fireball. Yes it’s true, everyone loves their iPad. Nearly. Everyone.

And it makes complete sense: combine the looks of the iPhone OS, add detailed menus much like a real Mac, a vibrant 9.7-inch LED screen, fast processing power from an Apple A4 chip, apps from the App Store (now coming in HD just for the iPad), and what do you get?

The Answer: The iPad. A well thought and well engineered tablet, which can serve as an eBook reader, a movie player, a gaming machine, a web browser, multimedia player, replacement for a netbook, a productivity device, and if you like, a simple couch computer (or bathroom computer if you’re crazy enough). It’s the do-everything computer, which can easily knock out a netbook, despite not being able to multitask. On that note, why would you want to multitask when the HD app you’re currently using is so beautiful that you can’t take your eyes off it? Eventually dear readers, I’m going to snatch myself an iPad. And you should, too.  You’ll definitely like it.

iPad App Store screenshots are leaked

If you’re extremely unpatient till April 3rd, then this should quell your desires for a little longer. iPad App Store screenshots have been leaked, and basically everything is just — bigger. Bigger icons, bigger pages, and bigger looking apps. As for the apps, it looks like the way you’ll be able to tell iPhone from iPad app is simple. All iPad-ready apps will be marked “HD”; and programs like OmniGraffle, which is priced at $49.99, are probably priced like that because they’re closer to the desktop counterparts — a great sign that iPad apps are really upgraded in terms of functionality. One more shot of the new iPad App Store is continued on the second part of this post.

Windows Phone 7 Series Debuted, Microsoft Wants Mobile Glory

Windows Phone 7 Series. It’s a lot to say, but brings a lot to the mobile computing scene. Windows Phone 7 will bring a Zune-influenced UI, and has completely ditched Windows Mobile touches all together. Windows Mobile is dead. Windows Phone 7 Series has come to life. Debuted at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Microsoft wants to be a major player, and partnerships with carriers and manufacturers is far and wide: AT&T, Deutsche Telekom AG, Orange, SFR, Sprint, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, Telstra, T-Mobile USA, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone, while hardware partners include Dell, Garmin-Asus, HTC, HP, LG, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba and Qualcomm.

Third-party handsets will not appear at MWC, but Microsoft is showing off its dev units of unknown originality. A main feature that will be present in all Windows Phone 7 Series phones is a high res touchscreen, three front-facing buttons (back, start, and perhaps a Bing key), and minor additions from the handsets themselves. Besides this, there will be strict requirements for specs in the phones (CPU speed, memory, resolution, aspect ratio, multitouch, and even button placement), and 3rd party UIs no more. No TouchWiz 3.0, no Sense UI.

As for social integration, it will be like XBOX on a phone, with LIVE games, avatars, and profiles, all being present, and also things like the Zune HD’s FM Radio. Social networking will get you integrated contact pages which will be present on the new “tile” UI. These “tiles” will be widgets, shortcuts, links to contacts, and all scroll vertically. As for the Outlook email app, which of course has support for Exchange, makes Blackberry email users look questionable.

The browser is Internet Explorer, and will not be as fast as Apple’s Mobile Safari, but will have multitouch right out of the box. Last but not least, all Windows Marketplace apps from previous versions will not be compatible in Windows Phone 7 Series. Sorry devs, it’s for the better. But the new Marketplace will still be where you download apps, once they’re available.

All in all I am in awe from Windows Phone 7 Series, and now we officially have 3 main players in the smartphone market — Apple, Google, and — Microsoft. Windows Phone will debut this holiday season in handsets that support it. Press release after the jump.

Nexus One only sells 20,000 units in 1st week?

A slightly very disappointing report coming from Flurry, but the Nexus One is having a hard time in its first week of sales. as a comparison, the myTouch 3G sold 60,000 units in its first week, and the Verizon Droid sold 250,000. The iPhone? 1.6 million units in its first week, but keep in mind that all of the other Android phones in the shot above were debuted in only one country — the States, whereas the iPhone 3GS made its way to 8 countries at launch. Does this mean Android should spread its wings farther? Or is this bad for Google? Neither, really. But Android should be made more solid in order to compete with it’s main competitor in the future — the all-powerful iPhone OS.
