ASUS Eee PC 1201N Review

While most blogs go berserk (hello CTIA and HTC EVO 4G!) and write about upcoming Androids (which isn’t bad at all), we’ll take just a little bit of time today to bust a new review out the door. A prime showcase is the ASUS Eee PC 1201N. Complete with a dual-core Atom CPU, 12.1-inch panel, Windows 7 Home Premium, 2GB of RAM, and an island-style keyboard, there’s a lot to love here, especially the light weight. Full review after the “read more” link.

Alienware M15x Core i7 (2.0 GHz) Review

With all of the buzz surrounding the M11x, the smaller sibling of the Alienware gaming notebook line, the M15x had to eventually come in and show which notebook can really perform. The Alienware M15x is all about power. And only power. It weighs a full 9 pounds with a 9-cell battery installed. And a side note for you all: you’ve probably read a thousand reviews of the M15x with a Core i7 processor, but have you ever read one with a 2.0 GHz Intel Core i7? Not many of those for sure. That’s why it’s the most powerful (and awesome looking) ever featured on LaptopMemo. Full review of course is after the jump.

Sony VAIO E-Series: Full of Color. Literally.

If you need some cheering up (or if you want to go colorblind), then boy, has Sony got the remedy for you! The new Sony VAIO E-Series seem to be the perfect laptop that’s “fashionable” without breaking the bank. Starting at $800 you get an Intel Core i3 CPU, 4GB of RAM, 500GB hard drive, HDMI out, Bluetooth, 15.5-inch screen, and Windows 7.

This base model starts shipping in March, but future models will have the option for a Core i5 processor, Blu-Ray, and up to 8GB RAM. All models feature a “WEB” button which allows you to open a web browser without booting into Windows itself. As for the color options, you should be satisfied: “five translucent, high-gloss colors— Caribbean Green, Iridescent Blue, Coconut White, Hibiscus Pink and Lava Black— and three matte colors—Maple Brown, Silver White and Gunmetal. Subtle patterns can be found on the lids, of the glossy models, with the palm rest mirroring the color of the PC adding a splash of brightness to the unit.”

So yeah, you can even color the keyboard to your color fantasy liking. The Core i3 models are for pre-order now, and the Core i5 ones will be revealed on February 7th. Battery life should be under 3 hours and weight under six pounds. PR after the break. [Via Electronista]

Sony VAIO Z Series: Core i7, 3.2 pounds, 4 SSDs, and 13.1 inches

Those are the main specs of the Sony VAIO Z Series coming to Europe in March. Meaning that sometimes after, the US should get it as well. This laptop is made out of carbon fiber. Carbon fiber! So it weighs only 3.2 pounds, and has a screen size of 13.1 inches, but can squeeze in a Core i7 CPU, and 4 SSDs in RAID 0 configuration. Oh, did I mention it had NVIDIA graphics and a 1920 x 1080 resolution? This is probably one of the most impressive designs in a computer for a long time. Although for all of this goodness, pricing is a concern, and there isn’t even one yet, but there are possible cheaper configurations in the shot after the break.

Lenovo Ideapad U1 Hybrid: Part Laptop, Part Tablet

Introducing the 3.8-pound IdeaPad U1 Hybrid. It’s a 11.6-inch laptop with a retractable multitouch screen. Pretty catchy huh? It has a  CULV Intel Core 2 Duo processor and Windows 7 Home Premium. But here’s the really “hybrid” part: When you pull the tablet out of the laptop’s chassis, a Qualcomm Snapdragon comes to life, thus creating a multitouch slate with a 16GB SSD that runs Lenovo’s Skylight Linux interface. Dual processors, dual OSes, and dual functions? This is the hybrid of all hybrids, and it’s coming in June for $999.

HP Mini 210 HD leaked with PineTrail, its 7 friends discovered

Less than a week before CES, HP’s line of netbooks and laptops are getting additions (about 14 in fact, and 8 are laptops), which looks pretty nice. The HP Mini 210 HD will include a 1.66GHz N450 Atom CPU and GMA 3150 graphics, along with a Broadcom Crystal HD chip, which is what makes it HD. The expected retail price is $330, with a range of colors which include: Sonoma Red, Solid Black, Silver Crystal or Pacific Blue. The folks at Engadget have all other 7 PCs that are headed to HP, so check it out.

Intel has been sued by the FTC for bad practices

image

Intel is knee-deep in trouble now. According to the FTC, Intel was “engaging in a deliberate campaign to hamstring competitive threats to its monopoly.” After paying AMD 1.25 billion to settle several disputes, and then getting fined by the EU for 1.45 billion, Intel now has the Federal Trade Comission hot on its heels. The allegations are the same the EU fined Intel for, which are:

The E.U.’s charges included paying computer makers to use Intel chips instead of AMD ones, and even threatening some companies if they went ahead and used AMD CPUs. The FTC notes that the public has been denied access to “potentially superior” chips as a result of the same bad practices. And it highlights what seems to be a particularly nasty one: Intel apparently designed compiler code so that it”deliberately stunted” the performance of the code when run on non-Intel CPUs, and then told the public the code simply worked better on Intel-made chips.

Ouch. The first hearing is on September 8, 2010. From the looks of it, Intel might not come out of this in a good condition.

Seagate Momentus Thin HDD is world’s slimmest

image

The Seagate Momentus Thin. The world’s slimmest hard drive is — wait for it — 7mm. That’s right, 7 millimeters, and it will ship in pretty big sizes too. 160 GB and 250 GB versions will be shipping out to OEMs for use in netbooks next month, and will appear at the CES in the same month. Pricing is expected to be much cheaper than 1.8″ hard drives, and because of that you might see this 5400RPM, 8MB cache, SATA 3Gbps hard drive in the netbook sitting on your desk. Check out the press shots below. [Hot Hardware]
