Previously a BestBuy-only deal the white EVO 4G was hard but not as hard as finding a white iPhone 4. Starting today, the white EVO 4G is available everywhere for $199 after a $100 mail-in rebate under a new or upgrade two-year contract. That’s it for the EVO folks. For now.
So, with the EVO4G getting Android 2.2 Froyo over-the-air (OTA) ahead of the August 3rd schedule, would you mind telling us if you’re Froyo’d, or still eating Android 2.1 Eclair?
The official press release is here. August 3rd is the day EVO 4G owners will have FroYo and all its deliciousness, and will allow something so cool it should be forbidden: allowing hungry users to opt-in early for the update. The update according to Sprint will be complete by mid-August. Oh, happy days..! Wait one second: the full official press release with words from reviewers is below.
The EVO 4G, much like any other handset in the market, has had its fair share of defects and problems. Two of the only real problems with Sprint’s EVO (no, it’s not the battery, its just too powerful for its own good) are the screen slightly separating from the main frame, and the screen being too sensitive. Both, are being resolved by HTC, pronto:
The manufacturing process of the EVO is being closely looked at, so that not many screens would “come out” of the frame.
As for the sensitivity: a software fix will be blasted over-the-air soon enough.
The 4G behemoth, the EVO 4G, will be available in a color other than bold black, but white. Starting at the same price as the original, the white EVO 4G pre-orders start today, and all you have to do is give BestBuy a $50 deposit, and on July 11th BestbUy will open its doors an unite you and your EVO in harmony. And if you’re into Sprint selling you their own handset, August 8th is the day they have access. This’ll make my purchase all the more difficult. Oh, and BTW, go outside and buy this NOW (that’s good advice).
One thing for a good Friday post: the EVO 4G kicks serious butt. But guess what’s even better? When you try it out at a Sprint store and see the long line and people playing around with it (there’s actually two demo units), all saying out loud “it’s like a computer” (yes, some guy said that). Anyways, I happened to have that Pentax K-x with me, and shot a few shots (which’ll be much better than this when I get a review unit), and a video that cut itself off, telling me that the K-x had filled up my memory card. Again. Enjoy the video and photos everyone.
Remember when Sprint said that the EVO 4G’s opening day sales toppled that of the Palm Pre and Samsung Instinct by 3 times over on their first 3 days on the market?
That never really happened. And Sprint says it ““inadvertently overstated”the amount of units sold. What they do say is that sales were in line with the numbers made by the Palm Pre and Samsung Instinct. That’s a different thing, people. The original press release is still at Sprint’s site, albeit slightly updated to avoid “inadvertently overstating” the EVO’s sales:
This release was distributed on June 7, 2010. It was updated on June 8, 2010. June 4, 2010 sales of HTC EVO 4G marked the largest quantity of a single phone sold in one day ever for Sprint – the record was previously held by both Samsung Instinct and Palm Pr. Launch day sales of HTC EVO 4G were six times greater than launch day sales of Samsung Instinct and nearly twice the launch day sales for Palm Pre. We continue to see sales of EVO 4G outpace sales of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre.
We originally reported that the total number of HTC EVO 4G devices sold on launch day was three times the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined. We inadvertently erred in the comparison. The total number of HTC EVO 4G devices sold on launch day was in line with the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined.
And that means online stores too, losers. If you snooze, you lose, and the early bird gets the worm. Those two phrases and several others apply to those that didn’t but the EVO 4G at the right time, and have to wait for the online store and retail stores across the country to restock. After the EVO smashed Sprint’s sale records, you can be sure there are a few hundred thousand EVOs being made right now.
