The Apple iPhone 4 Announced At WWDC 2010

Yeah,  yeah. This post came really late. I hear you guys. But anywho, let’s just move on the the show! At WWDC 2010, Steve jobs presented the new iPhone 4. Its desing is exactly the one seen several times before, and is packing a ton of new features, including the new iPhone OS name and branding: iOS 4. Yes, the name has changed.

The new specs of the just-announced iPhone 3GS’ successor are an Apple A4 (the same used in the iPad), with an Apple-rated battery life of 7 hours of 3G talk, 6 hours of 3G browsing, 10 hours of Wi-Fi, 10 of video, and 300 hours of standby time. Nice touch. On the new screen, the new iPhone 4 is 35% smaller than the 3GS, but packs in a “Retina display”. This 3.5-inch display has a resolution of 960×640 pixels, at 326 pixels per inch, which beats out any Android phone, the Nexus One and EVO 4G’s 800×480 pixel screens.  Rember that App Store issues that occured with the iPad? Well, the iPhone 4 has a 800:1 contrast ratio, meaning that apps will appear as they should, even with the new, high-res screen bracing the Retina display.

802.11n Wi-Fi is included as is quad-band HSDPA radio capable of 7.2Mbps down and 5.8Mbps up. There’s also a gyroscope coupled with the accelerometer for 6-axis motion sensing (read: extreme precision in movements with the phone. As for mics, the iPhone 4 packs dual-mic noise cancelling technology, much like the Nexus One.

The new camera(s) on the iPhone are astounding. The first, a 5 megapixel camera with 5x zoom, autofocus, and 720p video recording at 30fps, with a backside illuminated sensor which allows photons to crash into the sensor creating extremely well-lit low-light photos, meaning good ISO. The front-facing cam allows for Apple’s new FaceTime app, which allows for two-way video chat, but only over Wi-Fi while Cupertino is currently working on ways to get carriers to support the feature over their 3G networks.

Last but not least is the new Netflix app, which works exactly like the iPad’s, and the new iMovie app, which will retail for $4.99 on the App Store, which allows onboard 720p editing of your iPhone’s video. And lastly, the new iPhone 4 will be available in the US, UK, Germany, France, and Japan, and you’ll be able to pre-order it on June 15th and pick it up on the 24th. In the US, AT&T will sell the 16GB model for $199 and the 32GB model for $299 (both possibly a 2-year contract), in either full black, or full white.

Nokia E73 Mode: It’s T-Mobile, It’s E-Series, It’s Nokia

Besides the taunting made by the Nokia Man on Twitter, and my attacking back to get answers from him, I was proven to be unsuccessful while possibly being laughed at by my competitors.  Anyways, the E73 Mode is based on T-Mobile, is part of the familiar E-70 series line by Nokia, and has runs the S60 OS, clamps in a 5 megapixel camera with flash and autofocus, WiFi, and free turn by turn Ovi Maps — that’s it. Remember, it’s a Nokia QWERTY version of the Blackberry, so like the Blackberry, there’s nothing absolutely spellbound that it can do. Good news though: it’s retail for $69.99 on a two year contract with T-Mobile USA. PR after duh-duh-duh-jump.

Samsung Galaxy S To Launch In 110 Countries On The Same Day. Wait, What?

When you finally build a new smartphone for instance, with a 4-inch WVGA multitouch screen, a 1Ghz Samsung processor, Android 2.1 with TouchWiz 3.0 UI, a 5 megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording, and the usual Wi-Fi/GPS/3G, you’d expect that it would launch in let’s say at least 3 countries, right? Tell Samsung that and you’ll get a nice “you’re kidding me”. The latter specs are exactly what’s in the Samsung Galaxy S, and according to the Korea IT Times, the Galaxy S will launch in 110 countries, out of the 192 on the planet (or 195, depending if you look at the world map specs differently).

That would mean Samsung wants all the glory, but if they fail, they’ll fail spectacularly. Or they’ll succeed. Like really succeed.

Motorola Droid Shadow Appears Again

Remember that dude who published the first user guide picture of the Motorola Shadow? No? Well he’s back, in black. Actually what he’s really done is publish another pic, this time of the side. But along with his new leak, the specs have been altered. Instead of a 4.3-inch WVGA screen, it’s a 4.1 inch. And the 8GB of internal storage is coupled with an 8GB microSD card. Then comes the processor, which could either be a 1Ghz Snapdragon, or a 720MHz TI OMAP3630 (the more possible CPU to show up in the final model). Then comes the 8 megapixel camera, which should stay the same. Whatever specs the Shadow has, it’s still going to be a major rocker.

AT&T Early Termination Fees On Smartphones Get Pumped Up — to $325

Remember the good old days when you could get an iPhone, SIM unlock it, ditch AT&T and pay $175 for an early termiination fee? Yeah. About that…

You see, AT&T has doubled the pricing from $175 to $325 ETF on smartphones, while feature phones will be $160 to $150 (drops $4 each month). The new policy starts June 1st; here’s AT&T’s lousy explanation:

The idea is, and we think that it’s fair approach, that if you spend less on a device, your early termination fee should be less. If you spend more, your early termination fee should be more.

‘Tis wonderful!

HTC On Android 2.2 Update: All Of Our 2010 Devices Will Get It

In your excitement over Android 2.2 “FroYo” launching, there is one solid doubt left: when will you be able to use the goshdarn thing? So that’s when AndroidCentral pinned HTC for comment on that, and here’s what they got:

“…if your phone was launched this year, we will most likely offer an upgrade for it to the Froyo version. This includes popular models like the Desire and Droid Incredible as well as hotly anticipated phones like the Evo 4G, MyTouch slide and upcoming models. We will announce a full list of phones and dates once we are closer to launching the upgrades. We are working closely with Google and our other partners to ensure we have the earliest access to everything we need to provide a complete and solid Sense experience on Froyo. We expect to release all updates in the second half of this year but can’t be more specific yet.

This meaning that 2010 devices like the Droid Incredible, EVO 4G, HTC Desire, HTC Legend and myTouch Slide should all get the update, in Q2 of this year, since HTC per usual, must update the Sense UI, bit by bit, piece by piece, eternity after eternity. On the other hand Nexus One owners will probably get the update first, since they are stock Android, hardcore Google Phone users.
