T-Mobile basically confirms the Google Phone (Nexus One) for a January launch

Leaked photos, documents, employees spilling out info that they shouldn’t and rumors are almost nothing compared to the internal memo below from T-Mobile on 12/29.

Google, with support from T-Mobile, is scheduled to launch a new Android device in early January. The Google Android phone will be sold solely by Google via the Web.

All we need to know now is the price. $199 USD perhaps?

Nexus One car dock being tested at the FCC, Nexus One trade name is “Google Phone”

This is the most “almost official” use of a name we’ve heard yet for the Nexus One. While yesterday we saw a wireframe of the Nexus One Bluetooth dock, today we’re finding that the car dock is being put through its paces at the FCC, and is listed with the trade name of “Google Phone”. What makes this find even more plausible is that the form was made by HTC employees, and the “Google Phone” is the called the “Nexus One” in other parts of the document. And since this is the goverment, the employees who filled out the form must be referring to the product we want released — the Nexus One, with the trade name “Google Phone”. Click the “Read More” link for a wireframe of the car dock. [Engadget via FCC]

Nexus One dock appears from the FCC

Maybe the Nexus One will go as the most-leaked smartphone of all time. I don’t know if it will be, or if it is, but I’ll stop right there. Because we’ve got another Nexus One leak for you, courtesy of the leaking-happy FCC. The Nexus One dock includes Bluetooth, but the N1 itself already has Bluetooth 2.1+ EDR, so there probably is another motive here. The model number is CR B410, and besides the figure above, and knowledge of it having Bluetooth 2.1, we’re pretty much in the dark.

Google Nexus One to first be sold by invite only on Jan 5th?

image

Is that an Engadget watermark? Yes it is, and the only reason why it’s showing up here is because of the info that it contains. You see, the Google Nexus One will probably first be sold by Google invite only on January 5, and then T-Mobile would launch it later (hopefully soon after). So here are the most important specs for the Nexus One, and then 2 more shots that display additional intel after the break.

    Android 2.1

    11.5mm thick

    512MB RAM, 512MB ROM, 4GB microSD in-box expandable to 32GB

5 megapixel camera with mechanical AF and LED flash

    HSPA 900 / 1700 / 2100, 7.2Mbps down and 2Mbps up — in other words, be fine on EDGE

    3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED display

The Nexus One lacks multitouch (in some needed places)

image

According to tnkgirl, while given permission to play around with a Nexus One, but not given permission to take pictures of one, she claims that: “no multitouch support in the browser or in Google Maps,”. Which really sounds like a bummer, but then you have to remember that maybe it wasn’t a final production unit. She also says it works on T-Mobile 3G and is unlocked, but doesn’t work on AT&T 3G with EDGE. She also found “gold contacts” on the bottom which are possibly for a dock accessory. Oh, and here’s the rest of what she said about the Nexus One:

- It’s much nicer looking in person than in pictures- There’s a 4 GB micro-SD card installed
- The battery capacity is 1400 mAh
- The screen appears to be OLED (same size/resolution as the Motorola Droid
- 3G works on T-Mobile USA :)
- I can confirm that there’s no 3G on AT&T (EGDE only)
- It’s definitely unlocked
- It’s super snappy! Faster than the Droid..
- There’s no multitouch support in the browser or in Google Maps
- There’s no dedicated camera key, but it’s the same camera interface as the Droid- The trackball can be used to focus (like on other HTC devices
- Low-light performance is decent, but the flash is weak
- Calls are routed the normal way, not using data (VoIP), and sound fine
- The home screen is divided into 5 panes (like the Sense interface on the HTC Hero
- It’s using a micro-USB connector for data/power
- There are some gold contacts at the bottom edge, for a dock perhaps?
- Did I mention it’s fast?

Now hopefully she was just using a pre-production, multitouch-disabled Nexus One.

Second Nexus One pic surfaces

Want more Google Phone/HTC Passion/Nexus One pics? Well here’s the second new pic of the Nexus, and on the screen you can see that the app icons look exactly like Android 2.1 should. So for now, enjoy the Nexus One half-face shot from above.

Explained: New Google Phone Name, Nexus One

image

As much as this conflicts with earlier reports, the Wall Street Journal is claiming that the Google Phone is in fact called the Nexus One. That feels robotic-like, doesn’t it? A name that feels like it comes from the future and can go well with Android. One more thing that has been figured out with the Google Phone (or Nexus 1) is that it will be sold online, directly from Google.

I’ll be updating or writing new posts if anything new happens, in the meantime this is all you guys have to know, but if you’re really into it, here’s a quick recap of the Google Phone (HTC Passion, Nexus 1, or whatever it’s called.)

What we know so far about the Google Phone is in the list after the jump.
