In the new Google Maps for Android, version 5.2, you can request people to “ping” and check-into a location, as well as post ratings of different places directly on to Twitter, along with the usual bug fixes and optimizations. Also: the “bug your friend” feature only works if both users are on 5.2, so get updating. Via: Google Mobile Blog

Google: No Maps Navigation For iPhones. Thank You Very Much.
by Stefan Etienne on 23. Apr, 2010 5:03PM in Apple, Apps, Mobile

Earlier today we (and practically everyone else) told you that Google was porting its famous Google Maps Navigation, to the iPhone. Wrong! According to an official Google spokesperson, Maps Navigation will be available on platforms other than Android, but won’t be on the iPhone’s upcoming meal list. Well, that sucked was strange, right? At least you have other things to look forward to, like, a new iPhone for instance!
Google Maps Navigation coming to iPhone…..soon
by Stefan Etienne on 23. Apr, 2010 10:27AM in Apple, Apps, Google, News
While Google Maps Navigation has been one of the many feats that Android can and could pull off that the iPhone couldn’t, its exclusivity will be coming to an end says Google executives. There was no release date outed by the Googlers, but usually products announced by Google show up not too late after that. One thing that’s completely confirmed is that TomTom and Magellan (and everybody else) will be getting app sales hurt big time. And that’s fine with us, a long as Maps Navigation is the better app (personally to me, it is).
Motorola details the Android 2.1 update for Droid
by Stefan Etienne on 10. Feb, 2010 11:54AM in Android, Motorola
Moto already dropped the bomb on their Facebook page, but simply saying the Droid is getting Android 2.1 is not enough, is it? Which is why at the source link below there’s the release notes. Otherwise, as a recap for those of you who are ignorant of the update’s offerings, the Droid will get full multitouch in Maps, Browser, and Gallery, as well as an improved virtual keyboard, voice recognition updates, the new 3D Gallery, Google Goggles, and a few other minor bug fixes. No alert as to when the update will be put over-the-air, but Moto says users should get an alert when it’s ready.

Google Maps 4.0 brings Buzz support, now you can Buzz away
by Stefan Etienne on 09. Feb, 2010 8:39PM in Android, Google

Buzzzz! A word that will be overused because of Google’s new social networking service Google Buzz, which is integrated into Gmail. But for those of you who want some buzz without going to your laptop, you’re in luck. Google Maps 4.0 has launched at the Android Market, which brings you the special Buzz layer. It should work on all Android phones with Android 1.6 and above (G1 included). And as for you S60 and Windows Mobile owners: just download the new version of Maps and you’re good to go. That goes for you too iPhone.
Motorola: DROID Is Getting Android 2.1 “this week”
by Stefan Etienne on 08. Feb, 2010 6:01PM in Android, Breaking, Motorola

While we knew the Droid would be getting Android 2.1 in all of its multitouch glory, we didn’t know when. Well, now Motorola is claiming on its Facebook page that the 2.1 OTA update “will start to roll out this week”. Meaning that now, both of the permier Android devices — Motorola’s Droid and Google’s Nexus One — will have full multitouch capabilities, becoming even more a threat to the iPhone, and both will become even more awesome as well. Details: Motorola Droid to Get Android 2.1, multitouch?
by Stefan Etienne on 08. Feb, 2010 9:40AM in Motorola, Rumors
The boys over at Engadget seem to have their eyes on target for the Droid’s Android 2.1 OTA update. If you are a Droid owner who is envious of Nexus One owners (and their multitouch), be angry no more. According to one of Engadget’s “connects” (I’m saying the word “connects” now?) the version of Android that the DROID will receive is Android 2.1, version 1. Details:
- Google Goggles will be pre-installed, no matter how much you love or hate it.
- The browser will be multitouch-enabled just like Google Maps 3.4 (Woot!)
- It will retain the same-old, same-old Android 2.0 homescreen; no live wallpapers (boo!), and no 3D apps menu.
- The news and weather widgets from the Nexus One are included. Hmph.
Of course all of this could change, and this post could become as irrelevant as Android 1.5, so I suggest you talk this with a bag, not grain, of salt.
Motorola Droid gets multitouch support — in Google Maps
by Stefan Etienne on 05. Feb, 2010 2:11PM in Android, Breaking, Motorola

Feeling left out after Nexus One owners now have multitouch? Now the Droid at least has a multitouch support feature somewhere now. You can pinch-and-zoom your way through Google Maps if you download the update in the market right now. Afterwards, the Europeans are the only ones who have their Milestones with full multitouch right now, but at least this is something. But now we know something for sure with Google: when it rains, it pours.
