Pentax K-x DSLR Review

The Pentax K-x is an entry-level 12.4 megapixel DSLR camera targeted at — entry-level users. And that means dumbed-down controls, easy to navigate interface, easy mode switching, and a softy pricing scheme. But all of this doesn’t mean the K-x is limited to beginners: the K-x is a great DSLR camera. In fact it is anything but an “entry-level, easy to navigate interface, easy mode switching, and a softy pricing scheme” type of DSLR. Read on to see the review (and my thoughts), in detail.

HP Envy 14 and 17 hit the official press release pile

While all of the rumors were swirling if whether or not HP would do something right and release 14-inch and 17-inch versions of the HP Envy line, today the dudes at Packard have our answers. Starting with the HP Envy 14, which starts at $999 for a 14.5-inch panel, you’ll find a Core i5 processor, ATI Mobility Radeon discrete graphics, 7,200rpm hard drives, 8 hours of claimed battery life with discrete graphics off, and more ways to blow out your credit cards. The second option is the Envy 17, which has enough power to set your wallet and pants on fire. Coming May 19,  you’ll have Core i5 and Core i7 CPU options, ATi discrete graphics that support Eyefinity tech, and up to 2TB of storage — yes two terabytes (2,000 GB). PR (press release, duh) is below.

CTIA 2010: Samsung Galaxy S; 4-inch touchscreen, 1GHz CPU, Android

Look at you Samsung! While you may have not made the cut with Android in the Behold II, you surely have something good going on here with the Galaxy S! The Samsung Galaxy S has a similar appearance to the Wave debuted at MWC, but instead packs in a 4-inch touchscreen, 1GHz CPU made by Samsung, Android 2.1, FM Radio, 5 megapixel camera with 720p video recording, GPS with 3D Maps, Samsung Social Hub (sort of like FriendStream or MOTOBLUR), and is 9.9 millimeters thin (lighter and thinner than the iPhone).  PR after the break.

HP ProBooks get a kick with Core 2010 CPUs, really become pro

No real offense here to the business minded HP ProBook-s series, but hey, it’s only now that things got interesting. HP is releasing different models, beginning with the 13.3-inch 4320s to 15.6-inches and even a  heavier-duty 17.3-inch 4720s. The y introduce Core i3/i5/i7 processors to the family, so there’s a lot of power to be used here. Other configuration options include the $900 15.6-inch ProBook 4520s with a Core i5 CPU and a 500GB 7,200RPM hard drive, which seems like one of the good deals here that I could take for myself. And if you’re into a little gaming, have no fear, because you can get ATI’s Mobility Radeon HD 5350 GPU on any of the new laptops. As for colors they come in a “caviar” brown or a reddish “bordeaux” which are both matte. Other new snazzy stuff HP throws in is the ClickPad and HP’s exclusive Day Starter software, which lets you look at your Outlook calendar while your PC is booting up. These awesome lappies will be available in the next few weeks. PR (press release) after the break.

Motorola details the Android 2.1 update for Droid

Moto already dropped the bomb on their Facebook page, but simply saying the Droid is getting Android 2.1 is not enough, is it? Which is why at the source link below there’s the release notes. Otherwise, as a recap for those of you who are ignorant of the update’s offerings, the Droid will get full multitouch in Maps, Browser, and Gallery, as well as an improved virtual keyboard, voice recognition updates, the new 3D Gallery, Google Goggles, and a few other minor bug fixes. No alert as to when the update will be put over-the-air, but Moto says users should get an alert when it’s ready.

Dell Inspiron 15 (with Intel Core i5) First Impressions

Starting the day off here was a pretty slow start, but now with our first impressions on the new Arrandale chips on the Dell Inspiron 15, I think things are a little less boring now. So far, so good with the new Core i5 processor; closing and opening applications are a thing to marvel at, which is complemented by the 4GB of DDR3 RAM and 15.6-inch HD 720p screen, despite it creating some amounts of glare. It’s truly a step up for Dell. For its size it comes well equipped with an ATi 4330 graphics card and HDMI port. Keyboard is comfy, even with the added numpad. Expect the full review later this month, but in the meantime, feast your eyes on the above photo. Oh, and thanks to Dell for sending this thing in.

Dell Streak Concept Photos Leak Out

Fresh from CES, the Dell Streak Tablet Concept is a sleek looking handheld. So far from what the skimpy details say, the Streak runs on Android aaannnd — that’s it. So above is the super glossy Dell Streak, which looks exactly like a giant iPod Touch with a Dell badge on it (just kidding).

MSI X-Slim X600 First Impressions

The first laptop to arrive here at LaptopMemo is a slim one, or in other words, and Macbook Air look-alike. The MSI X600 is one slim, mean, powerful machine, with 1366 x 768 pixels gracing its very well-lit 15.6-inch screen. This review unit sent in by MSi is in all-clad black, with silver accents for the logos. Besides the well-lit glossy screen it packs in a 1.4 Ghz Intel ULV processor, Windows 7 Home Premium, 4 GB of RAM, a 500 GB hard drive, and an ATi Radeon HD 4330 graphics card, which so far can move its way through some (casual and sometimes demanding) games. It’s going to go through the rough and brutal multitasking tests I’ve come up for it, as well as battery tests, wireless tests, speed tests, etc. tests — you get the picture. But so far what I can say about it is:

  • It’s slim, hence the name.
  • When under heavy tasks the fan screams for air, and yet it still gets a little warm, mainly the handrests and touchpad.
  • The keyboard is very responsive, but the added numpad becomes a nuisance, in fact, while typing this post,  I’m hit numbers instead of words, which you might expect, can be distracting at work.
  • Lightweight isn’t the correct word when speaking of the weight in this thing, paper-like is more appropriate.
  • The trackpad supports glorious multitouch (and it works), but while that is a cool feature, the physical buttons take some reaching to get to, as they have a big dead zone, and only respond at the very end of each button.

So for the meantime enjoy the gallery (new gallery in testing I might add) after the jump, and expect a full review soon, as well as the new “Did you Know” and “Opinion” sections which will come around at the same time.
