Another Day, Another Major Adobe Flash Security Alert

Yawn. Today is Tuesday, so I guess hackers wanted to spice things up at Adobe again, this time with a new security exploit for the latest version of Flash Player 10.2 on Windows, Mac, Linux and Android. The exploit would allow the attacker to insert malicious code into the user’s system and in some cases, completely take control of the system.

The easiest way to avoid the gaping security hole is to know how not to get infected: It is typically delivered as a Flash file embedded in a Microsoft Word document attached to an email. Adobe is currently working on the issue, but no date for the patch has been mentioned.

Adobe Flash 10.2 Beta Is A Better Flash Then All The Other Flashes

That’s what we think, anyway. Adobe’s latest beta of Flash is version 10.2 available for Mac, Windows, and Linux. A new change is the Stage Video API, which is purportedly designed to reduce processor load by a drastic amount when playing videos on YouTube, Vimeo, and Brightcove, but the sites have to enable it for their systems — the aforementioned already have. Once that’s over with, Adobe says (purportedly, I’m really skeptical with them) that a full 1080p HD video would take up only 15% of full CPU power — seems cool if it’s true. There’s also some better pixel rendering, IE9 hardware acceleration, and some multi-display rig magic that makes it easier to have Flash running on many screens, or something of that sort. Beta download at the source link.

A Look At The ExoPC With 48 Hours Of Using It As A Tablet

I was pretty much stoked to hear when I was given a tracking number for the ExoPC review unit that was coming my way. Just think of it: a Windows 7 tablet that actually works — well. Turns out, I was slightly disappointed, but I still have high hopes for this thing. It runs full Windows 7, has an Atom processor that’s outdated, a front-facing camera, USB, SD slot, HDMI-out, and audio ports. It probably could be used as one of those really cool hack tablets or something. The ExoPC forums are already on it, I see.

So far the worst part of using the ExoPC is the accelerometer and the keyboard. It takes several seconds to flip from one orientation to the other, and the Windows keyboard is fairly sucky, although I took it to myself to write 2 LM posts on it, which needed some getting used to.

Other than that, it’s great to use for browsing the web, considering you keep whatever you’re doing under 4 hours before the battery cuts out, and that you have an web browser that works with the touch drivers.

Chrome also has a cool extension called chromeTouch, and it allows for some actually finger-scrolling to work in Chrome. Firefox and Internet Explorer 9 on the other hand work fine. Keep in mind this isn’t the review; ExoPC still has a software update for the UI they placed on it to add a bunch of new features that should improve the device; they tell me “at the end of the month”.

In the meantime, since it works great with HD videos on Flash, let me go watch some DrDisrespect.

Adobe Releases Flash 10.2 Beta, Lets You Play 1080p Video With Zero CPU Input

It turns out there’s a new version of Flash in the works, and the latest comes from Adobe Labs as Flash 10.2. New fetatures include Stage Video API and GPU acceleration that have “seen laptops play smooth 1080p HD video with just over 0% CPU usage.” GPU acceleration is now available for Internet Explorer 9, as well as more APIs like native custom mouse cursors API and support for full screen playback with multiple monitors; that sort of stuff. Turns out the beta is only in 32-bit version, and I’m using 4GB of DDR3 RAM here and I have 64-bit, so that means I’ll be laying back on Flash 10.2 for a bit.
