Featured Preview: Nikon D5000 vs. Pentax K-x

Two entry-level DSLRs in a preview battle. What’s not interesting here? To start off, let’s see who has the upper hand in terms of raw power: the D5000 gets a 12.3 megapixel CMOS, a 2.7-inch Vari-Angle LCD screen, 4 frames-per-second capture speeds, 720p HD video recording limited to 5 minutes, an ISO range of 200 to 6400, 11-point AF system with 3D focus tracking, a 18-55mm lens, and finally a price tag of $629.

The Pentax K-x could heavily be regarded as the D5000′s main rival. After all, the D5000 is basically a mighty D90 shrunk into a smaller body. The K-x comes with a 12.4 megapixel CMOS sensor,  18-55mm basic lens (like its rival), 720p HD video recording at 24 FPS (same as D5000),  11-point autofocus, HDR image capture, and 4.7 FPS capture speeds. Oh, and a price tag of $599.

Right off the start, the two SLRs share a lot in common, can use manual focus modes, include a variety of ports and features, and both are well-built and don’t skip quality. The K-x is slightly smaller and more “pocketable”, while the D5000 gves you the full weight and inconvenience as a DSLR should, even though both are in essence, digital single-lens reflex cameras. I won’t be going any further than right here, but what I can tell you is that the reviews for these baddies are coming up very soon. T-Mobile HTC HD2 gets its first video unboxing

You’ll have to sit tight till Wednesday to get your hands on a T-Mobile HTC HD2. But that will never stop your local Walmart, will it?YouTube user JDMiPhoner has been smart enough to unbox his on video, boot it up, and give us some of his first impressions. Although there’s a problem here: Windows Phone 7 Series. It’s not making the official upgrade to the HD2. In a few months time your new HD2 will be beaten by better WP7S handsets and you’ll unfortunately have an extreme case of buyer’s remorse. Video is after the “read more” link.

Dell Inspiron 15 (with Intel Core i5) First Impressions

Starting the day off here was a pretty slow start, but now with our first impressions on the new Arrandale chips on the Dell Inspiron 15, I think things are a little less boring now. So far, so good with the new Core i5 processor; closing and opening applications are a thing to marvel at, which is complemented by the 4GB of DDR3 RAM and 15.6-inch HD 720p screen, despite it creating some amounts of glare. It’s truly a step up for Dell. For its size it comes well equipped with an ATi 4330 graphics card and HDMI port. Keyboard is comfy, even with the added numpad. Expect the full review later this month, but in the meantime, feast your eyes on the above photo. Oh, and thanks to Dell for sending this thing in.

MSI X-Slim X600 First Impressions

The first laptop to arrive here at LaptopMemo is a slim one, or in other words, and Macbook Air look-alike. The MSI X600 is one slim, mean, powerful machine, with 1366 x 768 pixels gracing its very well-lit 15.6-inch screen. This review unit sent in by MSi is in all-clad black, with silver accents for the logos. Besides the well-lit glossy screen it packs in a 1.4 Ghz Intel ULV processor, Windows 7 Home Premium, 4 GB of RAM, a 500 GB hard drive, and an ATi Radeon HD 4330 graphics card, which so far can move its way through some (casual and sometimes demanding) games. It’s going to go through the rough and brutal multitasking tests I’ve come up for it, as well as battery tests, wireless tests, speed tests, etc. tests — you get the picture. But so far what I can say about it is:

  • It’s slim, hence the name.
  • When under heavy tasks the fan screams for air, and yet it still gets a little warm, mainly the handrests and touchpad.
  • The keyboard is very responsive, but the added numpad becomes a nuisance, in fact, while typing this post,  I’m hit numbers instead of words, which you might expect, can be distracting at work.
  • Lightweight isn’t the correct word when speaking of the weight in this thing, paper-like is more appropriate.
  • The trackpad supports glorious multitouch (and it works), but while that is a cool feature, the physical buttons take some reaching to get to, as they have a big dead zone, and only respond at the very end of each button.
