This Week On LaptopMemo: Android Takes The Lead Ferociously, And Rivals Have Coffee

There’s no doubt about it: Android, our favorite little brown robot, means serious business. In Las Vegas, the perfect place to lose all your money (or make some of it playing blackjack), CTIA 2010 steamrolled all other smartphone competitors with the Sprint EVO 4G, Samsung Galaxy S, Dell Aero, and the PTT-based Motorola i1. And of course, there’s Steve Jobs and Eric Schmidt not stabbing each other at a cafe, some new reviews, and more….

Steve Jobs and Eric Schmidt seen at a cafe? Why? How?

Either they were having a friendly discussion or are simply taunting themselves or the press. According to one lucky Gizmodo tipster, Steve Jobs and Eric Schmidt were having coffee at Calafia in the Town and Country shopping center in Palo Alto, California. What exactly were they talking about? We’ll leave the guessing up to you, but all we know is that this occurred earlier today. And what’s that black thing on the table? Look closely.

Did You Know: 60,000 Android phones are shipped everyday

This is a good addition to the Did You Know? fact section of LaptopMemo. Did you know that according to Eric Schmidt at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona yesterday, 60,000 Android phones are shipped everyday, with 1.8 million handsets per month and over 21.8 million handsets per year, worldwide? Although he failed to say whether or not these devices are being shipped to retailers, or if they are being sent to owners, it’s still impressive.

Hell Indeed Freezes Over: Google’s First Superbowl Ad

When Google CEO Eric Schmidt tweeted “Hell Freezes Over”, we expected something. Hell has indeed freezed over as Google’s first Superbowl ad was aired just minutes ago to over 90 million Americans (accompanied by beer, food, and whatnot).

The ad is titled Parisian Love, which is basically a love story, and pushes Google’s search engine technologies to the limit. It starts at “study abroad paris france”, then moves to “impress a french girl” and eventually goes all the way to “how to assemble a crib”; the ad shows how much Google can fit perfectly into people’s lives. I’ve embedded the video after the break.

What Superbowl Ad Has Eric Schmidt On His Toes?

Well lookie here! Eric Schmidt, king of all Googlers has posted a tweet saying the following words which makes him seem extremely excited, crafty, hopeful, or all of the above:

Can’t wait to watch the Superbowl tomorrow. Be sure to watch the ads in the 3rd quarter (someone said “Hell has indeed frozen over.”)

Color me puzzled, I have no idea what he has up his sleeves. [Eric Schmidt]

Google CEO resigns from Apple board today over "conflict of interest"

225px-Eric_E_Schmidt,_2005_(looking_left)

Google CEO Eric Schmidt has resigned from the Apple board today over “conflict of interest”.

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs recently stated that:

“Unfortunately, as Google enters more of Apple’s core businesses, with Android and now Chrome OS, Eric’s effectiveness as an Apple board member will be significantly diminished, since he will have to recuse  himself from even larger portions of our meetings due to potential conflicts of interest.”

It makes sense though. You can’t have your own operating system that could challenge Apple and think you’ll still be welcomed on their board. You’ll have to resign. Anyway, Apple has to deal with another problem: Windows 7. And now Chrome OS.

But you can be sure that this will be a very long and interesting war, don’t forget Apple recently rejected the Google Voice app for “suspicious reasons”. And the FCC investigation over the Google Voice app. And Google’s Chrome OS. And the Andriod OS.

It’s a good strategic decision for a company like Google that could challenge Microsoft and Apple in the OS market.

Or is it??
