Motorola DROID 2 launching for $199, pre-sale on Verizon starts the 11th

While it may have not been secret (read: at all), the Motorola DROID 2 is officially announced, and is ready to go. Perhaps it may be the DROID you’re looking for, literally, because the R2-D2 special edition Droid 2 will come out in September, with tons of Star Wars extras.

As for the basic DROID 2, it contains a 3.7″ display, 5MP camera, 8GB of internal storage, which is supplemented by an 8GB SD card that comes in the handset. Swype keyboard, Android 2.2, Flash 10.1, and Verizon 3G are also part of the DROID 2′s arsenal, coupled with an improved slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

Tomorrow Verizon Wireless will begin pre-sales online, while retail stores will begin on Thursday. The DROID 2 retails for $199 on a 2-year agreement

Verizon Wireless employees have begun their DROID 2 training

It occurs to me (and any other tech blog outlet that knows something of the industry) that it takes at least 2-4weeks to prepare employees  for a new launch device. In this period there  are more leaked photos, training guides, and finally the release which occurs at the end of this cycle. So it’s no wonder the August rumors for a DROID 2 launch are getting lined up nicely, due to the fact that Verizon Wireless employees have begun training.

Some Extra Clear DROID 2 Photos LEAK Out

So while the DROID X is having the time of its life right now, being cuddled by the execs at Verizon and consumers, the successor to the too-successful Motorola Droid is steaming along, and the photo above is the clearest photo we’ve seen of the handset yet. It’ll clearly run the nameless but MOTOBLUR-like UI, which is used by the DROID X.

The sleeker, more rounded out body design along with a re-arrangement of the touch capacitive buttons, is by far the only real changes the Droid 2, besides 8GB of internal memory, 512MB of RAM (twice the original’s) and finally the same 1GHz processing power as seen in the X. In fact, the Droid 2, which will retail for $199 on a 2-year contract, is every bit like the Droid X and Droid 1, except smaller (than the X), faster (than the 1), and has a slide-out QWERTY that knocks both out.

As for Android builds, the possibility of the Droid 2 coming with Android 2.1 then updating at the same time as the Droid X wouldn’t be surprising, but since there isn’t much to go by in that sector, I’ll leave it at that, folks.

Motorola DROID X: 4.3″ Screen, Android 2.1, 720p HD Video, HDMI-out. It’s The New Top

The Motorola DROID X has gotten its full presser in NYC by the CEOs of Adobe, Google, Verizon, and Motorola. First off, the DROID X allows you to stream Blockbuster video, and uses V CAST video, NFL Mobile, Skype Mobile, and a Back-Up Assistant, all on Verizon. But what does the DROID X offer against the competition?

  • Mainly a 4.3 inch screen with 854 x 480 pixels
  • Android 2.1 Eclair (the 2.2 update comes late summer), with a toned down version of MOTOBLUR
  • HD 720p video recording on a 8 megapixel camera
  • a 1GHz TI OMAP 4630 processor
  • 8GB of internal memoryand 16GB memory card (expandable up to 32GB)
  • Wi-Fi Hotspot service much like the EVO, but only supporting up to 5 devices and a 2GB data cap
  • Will have Flash 10.1 support (with the coming 2.2 update)
  • A multitouch keyboard that comes pre-installed with Swype
  • 3 antennas for noise cancelling
  • A 1500 mAh battery (that has the same outstanding batter of the original DROID 1)

Does this sound tantalizing to you? It does to the press and everyone else at the event. PR after the more link.

And the DROID X is priced at $199 on a 2-year contract for Verizon Wireless and launches on July 15th, with a 1930 mAh battery that will launch in the coming months and will add 1mm of thickness to the Droid X. Nice stuff.

Why I Might Just Buy The iPhone 4 Or Upcoming Droid 2. As My First Phone.

Tomorrow at 6AM I’ll have to get dressed, have breakfast, and go on a pwnage run while taking the SSAT (Secondary School Admissions Test for you peeps). It’s for applying to private schools, and I’ll be entering as a 9th grader (or 13-year-old gadget blogger). Wish me luck!

But that’s not the reason why I’m writing this. I’m writing a column here. An opinionated post. And they’ll appear more and more often, because what’s a proper tech site, a “blog” if you will, without posts straight from the authors internal wirings? And this is about the iPhone 4 (and then some). As much as friends, and other bloggers I’ve spoken to are shocked, I’ve never owned an iPhone. Not once. Nor have I ever owned an Android phone. Never. Nor have I ever owned a phone.

Yes, it’s true. All of my experience is mainly attributed to mainly computers. That, I own. But a smartphone, I haven’t. Mainly it’s been testing out the review units (that are always returned), providing up-to-date and crisp reviews to you readers that I found Android is on the march to become a perfect smartphone OS (even though it isn’t now). After hearing the iPhone 4 announcement, and comparing it to the EVO 4G, I came to the conclusion that after meeting up with a new EVO 4G owner in New York, that the battery is really that bad. I then turned towards the Droid Incredible, but then worried of the same. But then I saw the iPhone 4. I was spellbound. And I’m not an Apple Fanboy; I could give you a mile long list why I hate Apple and why I love them (mainly for the iPhone’s simplicity, that I’ve used time and time again).

The Droid X is an awesome looking device. After probably seeing it for a super split second, I also was in love with it. My choice might come down to the iPhone 4, and the Droid Xtreme (sorry Droid 2).  You see, the iPhone 4 is the new standard of smartphones, while the DROID line and EVO 4G are the phones that say “Hey, this is how the future really looks like”!

It will simply come down to which one I like, personally. But that’ll never, ever, come into play in one of my reviews. The game of favoritism is for back players. To me, reviewing is mainly WYSIWYG, and I think it’s the only way humanoids can stay fair.
