Opera Mini for iPhone to Be Unveiled Next Week. Availability? Maybe.

You read that correctly. Opera says that they will reveal Opera Mini for the iPhone next week at Mobile World Congress. Let’s absorb that for a minute: Opera Mini on the iPhone. Either Opera has completely lost its mind or Apple has lost all control of the App Store.

With the current tidal waves that a developer has to jump over to get their app approved, Opera’s going to have a competing web browser to Safari? just as as side note, it also doesn’t support Flash, so I see no point in this. It’s lunacy I tell you. [Opera]

Symbian Source Code is now open for all, calling all devs

Today is a big day for the world’s largest but probably least recognized mobile operating system:  Nokia Symbian. Today the Symbian Foundation has opened up its source code, and it is available to anyone who pleases to do have access to it. Android finally has an open source counterpart that it can compete with. As for anyone who has a compatible device, Symbian can be installed on that device for free .Soon the team at Symbian Foundation will publish its platform roadmap and planned features up to 2011, and the notes can be expanded and edited based on how much devs contribute to the mobile OS. The full source code is now available at Symbian’s developer site link after the break.

Android 2.1 SDK Makes Its Debut

The Android 2.1 SDK aka “Eclair” is officially available to Android developers. New features in the SDK include the new live wallpapers feature found on the Nexus One, including a new SignalStrength class which contains phone signal strength data, and new methods to add geolocation, improved video handling and more goodies to the Android WebKit-based browser. And as for those of you who are waiting for 2.1 to make its way to your handset, most handsets (at least a solid amount) will be getting “Eclair” later this month.

Apple dev event being held in January for Apple Tablet?

image

All rumors that have ever exsisted for the Apple Tablet have all come together to give us this new, nearly confirmed rumor. The Apple Tablet will be 7-inches — no more, no less — hopefully anyway. According to Silicon Alley Insider, there’s a 50/50 chance it would be real (the Apple Tablet), and it would be given its own private event in January for developers to increase the resolutions for their apps, allowing the Apple Tablet to display them (almost) correctly. The event would also educate (supposedly) the devs on how the Apple Tablet works and how they’ll have to publish apps for them to work on the Tablet.

SAI’s claim:

[Apple has] told select developers that as long as they build their apps to support full screen resolution — rather than a fixed 320x480 — their apps should run just fine

Afterwards, all good reports (like WSJ’s) claim thay it would launch in March. And yet with all of that juicy info, this is still a rumor. I give up, you win Steve Jobs (yeah right, game on).

Google’s Nexus One trademark filed, could case legal case

image

Now for those of you who are extremely excited over the Nexus One, just try to remember that Google releasing this smartphone is a rumor, and we’re not completely sure of it yet. Remember it could just be another Dev Phone for developers only.

Oh, what the heck! Let the speculation fly, because we have more for you. Google has just filed a trademark for the name “Nexus One”, but it could possibly bring them legal troubles. The “Nexus” name belongs to Philip K. Dick, who created the Nexus-6 replicants in Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and also in Blade Runner. Philip’s daughter is in charge of his licensing work — and you guessed it — she’s contacted lawyers to talk about it, and isn’t happy that Google didn’t ask for permission to use the name. She also stated that she would have been fine with it if she was contacted about it earlier.

So Google, wanna talk about the Nexus One’s name now? You’ll have to.
