JooJoo Tablet Starts Production, Will Have a Web App Store

The other tablet from last week doesn’t seem to be putting a dent into Fusion Garage’s progress with the JooJoo (formerly the CrunchPad). Neither is the lawsuit against the JooJoo from TechCrunch. Not only did the JooJoo get increased pre-orers after the iPad announcement, but now they’re in full production. Fusion Garage has teamed up with OEM CSL Group in Malaysia to produce it; according to CEO Chandra Rathakrishna, the OEM will be charging no bill for manufactururing, and instead will take a “low single digit” of revenue. While I do believe that math is completely off, Chandra seems to be managing things well.

Even though we don’t know the full specs of the JooJoo besides the 12.1-inch capacitive display, Chandra did mention that the JooJoo will be support Flash at launch, and when Flash 10.1 is released, YouTube HD as well; though for current HD streaming, a browser plugin will take advantage of the GPU. CEO Chandra also boasts that “We have a bigger ‘app store’ than Apple because we have the full Internet,” and that nevertheless Fusion Garage plans to unveil a web store. As for the iPad, Chandra was blunt about it: “Imitation is the greatest form of flattery.” He says everything from the couch being on stage, to the $499 price point, and Jobs calling the iPad magical (which is what JooJoo means in African, magical) is a clear reference to the JooJoo. Nice one, Chandra. Trash talking aside, so far, the JooJoo looks like it has a pretty good arsenal right now (for example websites in their full form and Flash). PR after the break.

Joo Joo: the sucessor of the CrunchPad, for $499

thejoojoo-1-pr

Fusion Garage has a superior sense of humor, don’t they? Currently they claim that Mike Arrington had nothing to do with development of the now dead CrunchPad, and that TechCrunch (who they say is just a blog) did not contribute and does not own any trademarks to the CrunchPad. Period. In the meantime, to make the situation even funnier, it’s called the Joo Joo. Putting the ridiculous name aside, the price is $499. When Arrington said it could be priced at around $200 to $300, Fusion Garage says that is a price like that is completely impossible for what the Joo Joo can do.

So for $499 you get: 12.1-inch touchscreen, a 4GB SSD, accelerometer, and according to FG “enough graphic power to deliver full HD video.” The battery life 5 hours on a single charge with Wi-Fi turned on. Pre orders start on December 11th on the Joo Joo’s official website. Hit the link for another shot of the Joo Joo.

The CrunchPad: Uh, it’s dead. Officially

crunchpad-near-final-design-20091105

That was not expected. When Mike Arrington said the CrunchPad was well alive, he meant it (we think). Until certain events and an email came along:

But the email went on. Bizarrely, we were being notified that we were no longer involved with the project. Our project. Chandra said that based on pressure from his shareholders he had decided to move forward and sell the device directly through Fusion Garage, without our involvement.

Err, what? This is the equivalent of Foxconn, who build the iPhone, notifiying Apple a couple of days before launch that they’d be moving ahead and selling the iPhone directly without any involvement from Apple.

Chandra also forwarded an internal email from one of his shareholders. My favorite part of the email: “We still acknowledge that Arrington and TechCrunch bring some value to your business endeavor…If he agrees to our terms, we would have Arrington assume the role of visionary/evangelist/marketing head and Fusion Garage would acquire the rights to use the Crunchpad brand and name. Personally, I don’t think the name is all that important but you seem to be somewhat attached to the name.”

And with that, the entire project self destructed.

Basically, Arrington got ripped off at the last second. In order to really understand the obserity of this situation, head over toTechCrunch to hear their story. I wonder what kind FusionGarage will come up with.

“Perfect” CrunchPad: “steamrolling along” for $300 to $400

crunchpad-near-final-design-20091105

Remember the CrunchPad? No? Okay, let’s bring it back to life again; Mike Arrington says that it will come out and will cost between $300 to $400. He says the rumor of costs going up are not true, and that in fact costs are coming down. But remember it’s a 12-inch tablet, and $300 to $400 is not too bad. He also says they’re making it “perfect”, and we should find some major news about it soon. Mike talked about this on the podcast “Gillmor Gang”, and the CrunchPad subject starts at the 39 minute mark.
