WikiLeaks Sheds Light On China’s Politburo Hacking On Google

Today is a new moment in history. Government secrets from around the world, both classified as “top secret”, “secret”, and levels below the aforementioned have been released to the public via several of the world’s most prominent publications, for all eyes to read, know, and understand. This being a tech blog, the first thing that is of interest is the China Politburo incident involving the hacking of Google and several other multi-billion dollar mega corporations within the last year.

An excerpt from the New York Times piece reads:

A global computer hacking effort: China’s Politburo directed the intrusion into Google’s computer systems in that country, a Chinese contact told the American Embassy in Beijing in January, one cable reported. The Google hacking was part of a coordinated campaign of computer sabotage carried out by government operatives, private security experts and Internet outlaws recruited by the Chinese government. They have broken into American government computers and those of Western allies, the Dalai Lama and American businesses since 2002, cables said.

This easily confirms why the United States government so heavily backed Google’s move out of China, and its accusations of the source of the attacks. Now, we’d surely suggest you go and read the rest of the NYT article, where subjects like these and more are very well detailed and presented.

Motorola partners with Microsoft to bring Bing search and maps to China

In an interesting turn of events, while Google is fuming against China in the recent cyber attacks scandal, Motorola seems to be leaning towards Microsoft in China to provide Bing search and maps on their Android phones; surely to protect their own interests and to make a quick buck in the process. In fact, as of this quarter, the entirety of Motorola’s Android phones that use Google search and maps will be replaced by Bing. Devices that are in customers hands or sitting on shelves will receive an OTA update that brings the new Bing apps. What’s interesting here though, and terrifying as well, is that there is no doubt that this wouldn’t be forced onto other markets. I’m looking at you U.S.A.

Motorola BACKFLIP Now Available In China

While we’re still waiting for the BACKFLIP to make its way here to the States later in this quarter, folks in CHina probably are already using their handsets right about now. You can buy the Chinese version of the BACKFLIP unlocked, with an 8GB memory card, and car charger for 4,298 Chinese yuan ($629 USD). The price of this handset hopefully will be under $200 with carrier subsidy on AT&T this March.

From Russia: Motorola Sholes Tablet XT701 shots appear

image

Above is a rendering of the Motorola Sholes Tablet XT701, which reportedly runs Android 2.1, has a 8 MP camera with flash, with other conflicting reports saying that it’s a 5 MP camera. FM radio, an HDMI port, 720p video recording/playback, and that strange lump are other features included in the package. This picture (and the other one after the cut) are from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the PRC, China’s version of our FCC. What needs to be figured out now is where (and when) it’s coming out. I’ll have this covered as more info comes to light (and I’ll try to press one of my connects as well). [Via BGR]

New Core i7 iMacs have cracked screens and aren’t booting

broken-imac

If waiting for your Core i7 iMac didn’t make you eager, now it’s even more so. Multiple forums across the globe are reporting that their new iMac is not booting and/or has a cracked screen. The guys from Giz seem to think it’s the packaging and that bumpy ride from China is the issue, and the other guys at Engadget think it’s just random. Whatever it is, it’s annoying. But still, I wish I could have a brand new PC, mine is ugly, old, slow and… I’d rather not talk about it.

New Rumor: ThinkPad X200e shots found; maybe it’s real?

thinkpad_x200e

New Rumor.  The ThinkPad X200e (or in other words, the rumored ThinkPad X200e or X100e), has 2 more shots that we haven’t seen before. Making it possible that this is real and not some super Photoshop rendering, which makes things more exciting. Who doesn’t like a new boring-in-black ThinkPad? I do. And if you look closely, it’s not the exact same ThinkPad design we’ve known for years.

Dell Mini3i phone for China has no Wi-fi or 3G, but it's real

500x_dellmini1_01

The cellphone Dell has made for China Mobile is no modern phone at all. It has no Wi-fi or 3G, but it does have a 3.5 inch touchscreen and Micro SD slot, as well as a 3.2 megapixel camera. Andriod Open Base Mobile System is the OS it houses, with that shiny Dell logo on the back, 2 volume keys, and a resolution of 360 x 640.

500x_dellmini2_01

I don’t like it too much. No 3G? No Wi-Fi?? No release date yet for China, and hopefully none for the US.

Come on Dell, no 3G??
