The Apple iPhone 4 Announced At WWDC 2010

Yeah,  yeah. This post came really late. I hear you guys. But anywho, let’s just move on the the show! At WWDC 2010, Steve jobs presented the new iPhone 4. Its desing is exactly the one seen several times before, and is packing a ton of new features, including the new iPhone OS name and branding: iOS 4. Yes, the name has changed.

The new specs of the just-announced iPhone 3GS’ successor are an Apple A4 (the same used in the iPad), with an Apple-rated battery life of 7 hours of 3G talk, 6 hours of 3G browsing, 10 hours of Wi-Fi, 10 of video, and 300 hours of standby time. Nice touch. On the new screen, the new iPhone 4 is 35% smaller than the 3GS, but packs in a “Retina display”. This 3.5-inch display has a resolution of 960×640 pixels, at 326 pixels per inch, which beats out any Android phone, the Nexus One and EVO 4G’s 800×480 pixel screens.  Rember that App Store issues that occured with the iPad? Well, the iPhone 4 has a 800:1 contrast ratio, meaning that apps will appear as they should, even with the new, high-res screen bracing the Retina display.

802.11n Wi-Fi is included as is quad-band HSDPA radio capable of 7.2Mbps down and 5.8Mbps up. There’s also a gyroscope coupled with the accelerometer for 6-axis motion sensing (read: extreme precision in movements with the phone. As for mics, the iPhone 4 packs dual-mic noise cancelling technology, much like the Nexus One.

The new camera(s) on the iPhone are astounding. The first, a 5 megapixel camera with 5x zoom, autofocus, and 720p video recording at 30fps, with a backside illuminated sensor which allows photons to crash into the sensor creating extremely well-lit low-light photos, meaning good ISO. The front-facing cam allows for Apple’s new FaceTime app, which allows for two-way video chat, but only over Wi-Fi while Cupertino is currently working on ways to get carriers to support the feature over their 3G networks.

Last but not least is the new Netflix app, which works exactly like the iPad’s, and the new iMovie app, which will retail for $4.99 on the App Store, which allows onboard 720p editing of your iPhone’s video. And lastly, the new iPhone 4 will be available in the US, UK, Germany, France, and Japan, and you’ll be able to pre-order it on June 15th and pick it up on the 24th. In the US, AT&T will sell the 16GB model for $199 and the 32GB model for $299 (both possibly a 2-year contract), in either full black, or full white.

BlackBerry 9670 is officially leaked, and is officially hideous

That object above is the new Blackberry, or in a more formal manner, the BlackBerry 9670. It’s a CDMA handset with Wi-Fi, a full QWERTY keyboard with trackpad, 5 megapixel camera (a first for RIM), 360×480 internal display with a large external display, the spanking new Blackberry OS 6.0, a microUSB port, microSD internal storage slot, Bluetooth, and a metallic finish casing. The first thing you have to recognize is that this is early clamshell hardware, but early nonetheless, this thing freakingly ugly. Since this is the only unreleased gadget we have for the evening, you’ll have to ping our good friend Boy Genius to check out the high-res gallery at the source link. Good times, these leaks.

iPhone 4 gets reviewed; someone just got fired

So that’s pretty much what it looks like now, which is exactly like what’s been floating around the web for days. While this may not be the final design, this is no doubt the next iPhone, the iPhone 4. New features include:

  • It measures precisely 4.5″ x 2.31″ x 0.37″ and weighs 140g, which is small
  • Better camera with flash
  • Front-facing camera
  • Higher-res screen but slightly smaller than the 3GS
  • A flat glass-coated back, uses a micro-SIM card, has a noise cancellation mic, and a metallic feel all around the sides, with seams here and there, including the buttons.
  • It’s also 3 grams heavier, has a 16% larger battery, and runs iPhone OS 4.0
  • It’s the new iPhone 4

However, Apple has reported that they lost the prototype, and they want it back, which is why they remotely wiped the entire OS off the handset. Reportedly, when Giz first got news of the prototype from a tipster, it was running iPhone OS 4.0, even before the official announcement. Check out the extra shot seen after the “read more” link, then scuttle to the source link and check out the whole review, ’cause we’re done here.

New Macbook Pro lines get spec’d up with Core i5 and Core i7, plus extras

Finally! Jumping the gun and going straight to the news: the Macbook Pro line has been refreshed featuring Core i5 and Core i5 processors. The basic Macbook Pro 13-inch comes with 4GB of RAM, 320GB, and a 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo processor, but the 15-inch and 17-inch models are Core i5 and Core i7 for the record. Also, the higher-end models grab the Nvidia GeForce GT 330M graphics with Optimus switching, meaning that web browsing will be the lightest load of all time, and graphics speed will only be called in when you actually need it. While the 2.4Ghz and 2.66 Ghz Core 2 Duos with a claimed 10 hours of battery life in the 13-inch model definitely are to impress (hey, no Core i5 in the 13?), it’s the 15-inch and 17-inch ones that really count: Core i5 2.4GHz (520M), Core i5 2.53GHz (540M), and Core i7 2.66GHz (620M) processors come in the larger models, as well as the faster Nvidia 330M instead of the 13-inchers 320M. Also, Apple claims that you’ll get between 8 and 9 hours of battery life on these bad guys.

All models come with 4GB of sweet DDR3 RAM, 320GB hard drives and 500GB in higher-end ones, you have the stellar and tempting option of a 512GB SSD for $1,300. So to shoot it all down, the 15-incher gets the Core i7 and the 17-inch gets the Core i5. But let’s go to what this will all cost you, right? It’s $1,799 for the 15, $2,299 for the 17, and $1,199 for the 13. And Apple’s not done with you yet: a 1440 x 900 “glossy” display comes basic on the 15, a 1680 x 1050 glossy display goes for $100 more, and an anti-glare hi-res display for another $50 on top of that (making it $150 for a matte display). Everything’s up at the Apple Store with a shipping date of “24 hours” while the 13-inch model is delayed “2-4 days”. Awesome stuff, if you ask us. (Sans not having Core i5 in the 13, but still a great refresh).

Opera Mini for iPhone Gets The App Store Approval. Whoa

Whoa. Like, whoaaa. Opera Mini for the iPhone has the blessings of Steve Jobs and Co. and should be up on the App Store within 24 hours, while some UK and Australian iPhone owners are already browsing the web on their new, speedy Opera Mini. The app will be so cheap that it’s free, and it’s amazing to see that Apple might just be opening up the the submission of apps, as well as not being such a dictator about them. Press release and promo video after the break. Consider this a win for the iPhone Nation.
