Who’s Using What In Android? Let’s Find Out!

While 1.5 and 1.6 are still alive, Android 2.1 is still a mostly growing OS version (or at least growing in usage due to OEMs updating their handsets). Android 2.2 on the other hand is practically on nothing except the now-defunct Nexus One, so with that out of the way, and every Android manufacturer proclaiming that their handsets will be Froyo’d by this summer, while HTC is planning to have all 2010 handsets updated to this Winter, the latest.

BoostMobile confirms June 20th release date for the Android Motorola i1

The Motorola i1 isn’t your most powerful, pretty looking, and latest firmware busting Android phone (it runs 1.5 for god’s sake). But it does comply with military toughness standards, and that means it can take a super beating without any complaints at all. While Sprint will have availability of the handset “sometime this summer”, Boost has already yelled out the release date: it’s June 20th folks!

I’m seriously saying one thing: at least it’s the first prepaid Android phone, because I’ll stay far and clear of buying it. Oh and yeah, because of that, it’ll cost $349.99 at BestBuy with Boost’s Everything web/talk/text $50 plan. With specs like a  3.1″ 320×480 “tough” touchscreen, WiFi b/g, 5 megapixel AF camera with LED flash, a 500Mhz freescale Zeus 2.0 processor, 256MB RAM and 512MB on-board storage (and MicroSD slot, duh), I’d still pass.

Motorola i1 Will Cost $349.99 At BestBuy For BoostMobile’s Pre-Paid Service

The first prepaid Android phone using Android (1.5 Cupcake, sigh), is a MOTOBLUR sulking, military grade busting, push-to-talk talking Motorola i1 that will be on Boost Mobile’s everything $50 plan. Meaning that data, voice, and text comes down to a sweet $50 a month. The downside is that the handset itself will retail for $349.99, and will only be sold at BestBuy. No word on a launch date, but that will have to be marked as “soon”, right?

Android Version Fragmentation is Being Trampled by Android 2.1

There has only been one true demise for Android and its app developers – fragmentation. This literally meaning that Google releases so many versions of Android that the lazy manufacturers cannot keep pace, and resort to building new phones with old operating systems. At this point in time, there are 3 primary versions of Android.

They consist of nicknames after desserts, and they are Android 1.5 “Cupcake”, Android 1.6 “Donut”, and Android 2.1 “Eclair”. But in the past four months, Google and its phone manufacturuers like Motorola and HTC have been updating their handsets to version 2.1, with fantastic results. As according to Google (or better yet, the Android Developers) in the chart above, Android 2.1 has  a 37.2 percent market share, while 1.6 devices have 28 percent, and Android 1.5 coming in at 34.1.

Although this can all change. You see, in only a few days, Google will possibly debut Android 2.2 “FroYo”. The nickname derives from Frozen Yogurt, and it will do anything but freeze Android, because this release is targeted at making small UI improvements, built-in tethering, Flash 10.1 web browser support, and supposedly finding way to completely nail down fragmentation once and for all, by making the update available on your computer rather than OTA (over-the-air) from your wireless 3G network onto your phone.

Motorola CLIQ XT on T-Mobile for $129.99

So there it is. The ugliest Motorola handset to date. Running Android 1.5, MOTOBLUR, and is more like a keyboard-less CLIQ. For those of you strangely interested in said smartphone, there’s a 2-year agreement that you’ll have to agree with, then you’d be on your way to lunacy. Otherwise I’d suggest you buy a Droid, Devour, or CLIQ for that matter.

Honestly the reason why I didn’t provide full coverage of today’s tech news is because I was busy. Full coverage of tech news (and the start of the “Opinion” and “Did you Know?” sections) will begin later this week. Sprint Hero Review: Strong, Fast, but has its faults

sprint-hero-review-front

You saw the hands-on and now you see the review! To start off, this loaner handset was provided by HTC for review, as well as all other handsets reviewed on LaptopMemo. Read the Disclosure Policy for more info.

The Sprint Hero itself:

You have Android 1.5, and even though it’s old, it gets the job done. Now to clarify the latter sentence. It gets the job done, it doesn’t blow it out the window. Explanation: Google Maps works great, Sprint 3G is great, the multitouch feature is perfect for those missing the iPhone’s pinch and zoom feature. Even Android 1.5 is great with the Sense UI installed, but the only problem is….
