HP Unveils Some New Laptops, But The Dm1 Is The Coolest

Tonight, HP had cometh to all gadget blogs with news. I present to you — new laptops. Begin!

First off is the new Envy 17 (or refreshed, or whatever) with CoolSense (keeps it from frying your man — lap), the new Intel Core processors with the same naming schemes as the previous ones, albeit more awesome-ish, has integrated graphics and a Radeon 6850M to pwn those n00bs, the Beats audio sound system of glory, and a 17.3-inch LED backlit screen. It’ll be available soon. Mmm, tasty.

For seconds there’s the new dv7 (which gets Beats Audio) and dv6 laptops, which only have the new Intel Core processors, some Radeon graphics cards, and pricetags of $900 for the dv6, and a thousand Benjamins for the dv7. They get released the 9th.

And then, only then, is the really cool laptop out of the bunch (seen as the top image). It seems to be to my luck that I keep on writing and loving 11.6-inch notebooks, from the Alienware M11x R2 (make an R3, please!) the Macbook Air and now the Pavilion Dm1. It’s about 1-inch thick, has 10 hours of battery life, the new AMD Fusion “APU” (accelerated processing unit, combining both graphics and processing), and has support for 1080p HD video (whaaa?), and supports DirectX 11 graphics on that 1080p HD screen of 11.6-inches and 1.6GHz of speed starting at $449. It also has 3 USB 2.0 ports, 1VGA, and one HDMI port. There’s options for a 320GB hard drive and 8GB of DDr3 RAM, too. I’d better review one of these, ASAP.

The ATI Brand Is Dead, And AMD Killed It. But The Radeons Live?

Today is a very sad day for those of you PC gamers (and people who just know about computers). The ATI brand, the main opposition to NVIDIA’s graphics cards is now dead. AMD, the current company who owned ATI, had decided that ATI Radeon graphics cards (and everything else under their name will be re-branded with “AMD”. The first ATI (excuse me) video cards which will have AMD branding ship out later this year. It’s unfortunate, but AMD is promising to bringing along the Fusion series which packs a GPU and CPU in the same chip.

Intel has been sued by the FTC for bad practices

image

Intel is knee-deep in trouble now. According to the FTC, Intel was “engaging in a deliberate campaign to hamstring competitive threats to its monopoly.” After paying AMD 1.25 billion to settle several disputes, and then getting fined by the EU for 1.45 billion, Intel now has the Federal Trade Comission hot on its heels. The allegations are the same the EU fined Intel for, which are:

The E.U.’s charges included paying computer makers to use Intel chips instead of AMD ones, and even threatening some companies if they went ahead and used AMD CPUs. The FTC notes that the public has been denied access to “potentially superior” chips as a result of the same bad practices. And it highlights what seems to be a particularly nasty one: Intel apparently designed compiler code so that it”deliberately stunted” the performance of the code when run on non-Intel CPUs, and then told the public the code simply worked better on Intel-made chips.

Ouch. The first hearing is on September 8, 2010. From the looks of it, Intel might not come out of this in a good condition.
