Yup, that’s it. It’s obviously a Sony Ericsson device of some sort, and through all these photos, looks rather appealing. But other than the picture and that it will be announced at CES 2012, there’s no other info to go by.

Remember how Sony Ericsson came to be? No? Well, let’s just get to today’s news. Sony has agreed with Sony Ericsson to buy out their 50% stake, therefore completely gaining control of the company in a joint venture, and allowing Sony o more tightly integrate SE devices into their Sony line of products. Ericsson has agreed to a €1.05 billion in exchange for its 50 percent stake, and if pending regulatory approval allows it, the deal will be done in January of 2012. This effectively means that the Walkman is nearly dead, and that the SE brand will be many times more active. Press release after the break.

The Xperia Play is headed to AT&T with HSPA+ radios and the same 4-inch LCD screen with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor. After handling it at AT&T’s holiday preview event here in New York City, there are two noticeable things about the AT&T Xperia Play. One, it comes in “Stealth Blue”, and two, uses the Timescape UI on top of Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread, and not Vanilla like the Verizon variant.
And here’s a bit of welcome news: whereas the games for the Xperia Play were sold on Verizon’s V Cast apps store (essentially a crapware kingdom), according to the AT&T rep I spoke to, will instead be sold in the AT&T tab of the Android Market. This is a much better idea.

Is this — the PlayStation Phone? Yeah, pretty much. Although I think an actual PlayStation Phone from Sony (not Sony Ericsson) would have been a better idea, the Xperia Play is “PlayStation Certified” by Sony and built by Sony Ericsson. Running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, dedicated PSP-like controls, CDMA 3G service on Verizon Wireless, a 4-inch WVGA LCD, and front with back-facing cameras, the Xperia Play should have been the gaming phone of the year, right? Not so much. Let’s see why in the review, after the break.

It’s about time! The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play (which hasn’t been in the happiest of daydreams, to be honest) is launching on Verizon May 26th with pre-orders beginning on May 19th for $199.99 on a 2-year 3G agreement. Specs include Android 2.3 Gingerbread with Sony Ericsson’s latest skin, PSP-style gamepad, 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon II processor with an Adreno 205 GPU, a 4-inch multi-touch display, front-facing VGA camera for video chat, 5 megapixel back-facing camera with 720p HD video capture, mobile hotspot for up to 5 devices via 3G, and fianlly comes with 7 free games: Madden NFL 11, Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior, Asphalt 6: Adrenaline, The Sims 3, Star Battalion, Crash Bandicoot, and Tetris. 50 more games will be available in the V CAST app store, which is Verizon’s own app store that resides on their current Android devices. Press release after the — break.

Today marks the release of the world’s first “PlayStation Phone”, the Xperia Play. It’s currently available in 11 countries: UK, Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Russia, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Gamers in the United States will be seeing Xperia Plays on Verizon sometimes in May, while your foreign counterparts get to enjoy (hopefully) the Xperia Play. 60 games are offered at launch, some of which include N.O.V.A 2, Need for Speed, Asphalt 6 (which is available for free), Assassins Creed Altair’s Chronicles HD and more. Press release, after the break.

So the entertaining journey for the Xperia Play ends right here. The PSP Phone (don’t let SE hear you say that) has the full PSP gamepad layout, Android 2.3 Gingerbread with a Sony Ericsson UI coating, a decent 1GHz Snapdragon CPU and Qualcomm Adreno 205 graphics for 60 frames-per-second performance, and a 4-inch 480×854 resolution display. Other specifications to make note of are a front facing camera, a 5 megapixel rear camera, 512MB of RAM, and a microSD card slot.
It’ll launch sometimes in March on Verizon Wireless. 50 PlayStation titles will be available at launch, and a “legendary” PS One game will be pre-installed on every unit. Complete PR details and video below.
