GoDaddy. A hypocritical company hell bent on always making money, despite what the means are. Unfortunately, they’re my current hosting and domain hosting provider (something that will change), but in the meantime, they have officially been removed from the SOPA supporter’s list, as part of their PR campaign to save face. Nice try, clowns. Via: TC

RIM Just Lost $1.7 Million Worth of PlayBooks
by Stefan Etienne on 19. Dec, 2011 7:40AM in Lame, RIM, Tablets

So, if the PlayBook crisis can’t get any worse for RIM, and that the Playbook is also marked-down several hundred dollars, now some thieves have stolen $1.7 million worth of them, in Indiana. The total amount of units stolen is purportedly 5,000. Yikes. The very sad part is that even the thieves will have a hard time selling a tablet no one wants. At least it’s a few extra tablets RIM doesn’t have to worry about. Via: The Verge
Oh, Fudge: AT&T Will Begin Throttling Unlimited Smartphone Data Users Starting October 1st
by Stefan Etienne on 30. Jul, 2011 11:02AM in AT&T, Internet, Lame
It had to come to fruition eventually: AT&T will being throttling the “top 5% of smartphone data users” who use a lot of data. As AT&T stated, “One new measure is a step that may reduce the data throughput speed experienced by a very small minority of smartphone customers who are on unlimited plans – those whose extraordinary level of data usage puts them in the top 5 percent of our heaviest data users in a billing period. In fact, these customers on average use 12 times more data than the average of all other smartphone data customers.” They also are very careful to mention that they will not be throttling everyone, just a small percentage of users. Either way, it still sucks.
Press release seen after the break.
RIM’s Mike Lazaridis Crashes And Burns In BBC Interview
by Stefan Etienne on 13. Apr, 2011 12:11PM in Did You Know?, Lame, RIM

Research In Motion’s CEO, Mike Lazaridis had an interview with the BBC recently, which contrary to his usual public personality (that is to say, cool and collected) turned into a quick walk out of the room. The question that ticked him off had to do with the saga between BlackBerry devices and the crisis in India, where the government seeks to have greater control of the tight security systems in each device. The question, which Lazaridis deemed “unfair” (seriously?) is at the ‘via’ link, at the very end of this sentence. Via: BBC
Crysis 2 For PC Is Leaked, And In A Big Way
by Stefan Etienne on 12. Feb, 2011 9:29AM in Did You Know?, Gaming, Lame

This is terrible. Things leak all the time. Some intentionally, some not. This one wasn’t intended. Crysis 2 just got leaked to about every pirating site available, and includes the full game, multiplayer, and a master multiplayer online key. While the game is not completely finished, the game is fully playable. It’s pretty bad for Crytek and EA, and will have an effect on sales for sure.

Google Has A Bad Moment, Sends *Everyone* With A Cr-48 Spam (Update: Google Responds)
by Stefan Etienne on 12. Feb, 2011 8:17AM in Did You Know?, Google, Internet, Lame

Ah, the morning. So wonderful, so pleasant.
BAM! 70+ emails worth of spam in your inbox, and not in your spam folder, in Gmail. Heck, that could give some sensitive people full-on heart attacks. While spending a good 10 minutes deleting emails on a G2 (i.e not a fun way to start your day), I left all the emails that has swearwords and spammy titles, in hopes of figuring out what was happening (that’s my Gmail account above). It turns out that I made a great choice of keeping those emails. Most people had already come up with tutorials on how to unsubscribe from the Google Pilot Testers group that seemingly all Cr-48 users and hopefuls who might have expected a Cr-48 were thrown in, then bashed with all these emails, which started in the very early morning.
Michael Arrington has something written up on this, but I’m not sure he has a Cr-48. What the heck, just click it. In the meantime, I’m awaiting responses from Google ninjas and some press teams.
Update: It turns out one Cr-48 tester that I’ve met in real-life hasn’t seen any of these emails. See his tweet after the break.
Update 2 @ 8:58 AM: An email just sent from Google to my Gmail account has comment about the spam emails:
Hi Stefan,
We posted an apology to the group last night explaining the problem.
That message read: “A bug in our script to invite users to a Chrome notebook discussion group accidentally signed everyone up to receive email by default.
Best,
Google Press Team
So that settles that. It was a mistake. Now to clean-up your inbox and hope Google never does this again.
Sprint’s Kyocera Echo Is A Dual-Screen And Out-Of-Place Android Device
by Stefan Etienne on 07. Feb, 2011 7:06PM in Android, Editorials, Lame, Mobile, Sprint
It has two screens, both of which “combine” for 4.7-inches of screen at 960 x 800 pixels! It runs Android 2.2! Has a 5 megapixel camera for 720p HD video recording! And it’s from Kyocera — is that anything special?
It’s made out of cheap looking plastics, only uses 3G, is as thick as a brick, but at least has a second-gen 1GHz Snapdragon powering it. The hinge allows it to be propped up like a laptop, used as a regular single-screen phone, or have both screens laid flat. Look, if you’re going to use a smartphone, how will you perform the fancy “simultasking” that Sprint and Kyocera are spewing out as a “true” way to multitask on a phone? And while the the mail and map apps can use the extra real estate for better viewing, you’re looking at something bigger than an EVO 4G and almost as big as a Dell Streak. And how long will this thing last on a charge, anyway? Turns out it comes with a spare battery pack charger and battery. Heh.
There’s little point in have a dual-screen phone, when the consumer market is already adjusting to bigger phones, which have proved a success. It’s as if Kyocera execs and engineers said in the style of Dilbert, “We can’t beat HTC, Apple, and Samsung, so let’s put two screens together and sell it!”. Like that would work. Via: Sprint
How Intriguing: Verizon To Throttle Speed Of Heavy iPhone Data Munchers
by Stefan Etienne on 03. Feb, 2011 11:07AM in Apple, Did You Know?, Lame, Mobile, Verizon
This is one of the warnings to keep in mind when purchasing an iPhone on Verizon. One, you’ll get a better network, but with slower data speeds. Two, if you use a lot of data, those slower data speeds will get slower. Yeah.
As Verizon puts it, this only applies to users that use an “extraordinary amount of data”, and are in the top 5% of Verizon data munchers. Once that once that throttling is in motion, it will remain in effect till the end of the monthly billing cycle. For a full understanding of what is going on here, including how file formats would be affected, hit up the source link, peeps. Via: Verizon (PDF)
