Samsung Series 5 Chromebook Unboxing

Hello there! This happens to be a special post (or something  like that) — the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook unboxing! Special thanks goes to Karen, a technology enthusiast and reader of LaptopMemo for sending us the photos of her unboxing, which displays the retail packaging, first boot up, and of course the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook itself. Thanks, Karen!

The unboxing is in the gallery below.

Exclusive: BoardVine Wants To Be A Next-Gen Bulletin Board System

Coming from just 5 employees (one of them an investor) is BoardVine, an online web app built from HTML, HTML 5, Javascript, and PHP. Founded by Dustin Snider, the app is aimed to be used as a bulletin board with a social feel of sorts, which in the following quotes Dustin explained to LaptopMemo: “Boardvine is an online platform for people to create their own bulletin boards, meaning instead of hosting your own bulletin board we host it for you and allow you to manage every aspect of it down to each and every line of code.”

So there’s a +1 for usability and the non tech-savvy, but Dustin goes on in order to distinguish BoardVine from existing apps: “The difference between boardvine and the open-source software is with BoardVine you don’t need to know code to add a really cool features to your board or know CSS to add a really cool theme as we have done all that for you and will always be working to add more features.”

Dustin and his team are looking forward to releasing on time, which would be pegged as sometimes in June. Other details are rather scarce as the startup is in its (obvious) early stages. You can sign-up by entering your email address at BoardVine’s site for future updates.

Hear that geeks? In a recent Twitter conversation with C418 (but he didn’t actually respond to mine, he just did so publicly), the genius creator for the Minecraft soundtrack, revealed the release date and pricing for the Minecraft Alpha music album, which is before the Beta one that all of us know and love. The date? Not set in stone, but it’s mid-February. The price? $4. Where? Probably on his site. I don’t know about you, but I’m buying it. Via: Twitter (@C418)

One Of Our Favorite PR Buddies Is Leaving Nokia

This guy was awesome. His name is Joseph Gallo and a great agent to have. Of course like all things that must end, he’s ending his job at Nokia PR effective on December 30th. He also seemed pretty bummed too, see here:

Unfortunately, this means I won’t be able to grab drinks with everyone at CES as I won’t be going this year.

You can follow him on Twitter as @jgallo02. Good luck Joe!

A Short Chat With A Google Chrome OS Ninja

Turns out I have a CR-48 to play around with. Big deal (I’m pretty surprised, actually). So moving on in a more professional manner is the short chat I had with a Chrome OS Ninja. These guys probably aren’t as awesome as the ninjas unboxing the Nexus S and Nexus One, but this’ll have to do. First off, Chrome OS Ninjas are for the benefit of CR-48 testers, and provide support, answers, and help via email and phone.

My reason for contacting them was that first of all, the CR-48 has a SIM card slot — that I can’t seem to work out with either T-Mobile or AT&T SIM cards. And secondly if you noticed, the stickers used in the Chrome OS promo of destruction were very interesting, so I inquired where to find them, too.

The conversation via email is below.

Tron: Legacy Razer Gaming Mouse Review

Razer has the rights to produce some official Tron: Legacy gaming gear. Perhaps what is the crown of the series is the gaming mouse, complete with a 5600dpi sensor and 7 buttons (the usual 2 on top with scroll, two on the right, and two on the left). It’s a wired-only mouse, which is unfortunate, and is entirely built out of plastics. But it lights up and has a speaker for some “special” sounds when it’s plugged in. Oh, and it’s $100 (thanks to Razer for letting me test it for days). Now just jump past the break for the full review.

Exclusive: Hands-On With The Tron: Legacy Razer Gaming Mouse

In honor of Tron: Legacy and its upcoming film debut, Razer has tasked itself with building the ultimate Tron gaming mouse. It costs $100 and uses a 5600dpi 3.5g Laser for tracking on almost any surface (I’m currently using it at full speed on a blanket), lights and sounds at startup and shutdown, a high-quality 7-foot USB cable, and 7 “Hyperesponse” buttons. It turns out, upon unboxing it (which you can enjoy seeing below) there’s a packet for the manuals, and a plastic plate with the Disney, Tron: Legacy, and Razer logos on it. Apparently, it doesn’t work as a mouse pad, but instead, a collector’s item.

The mouse is extremely response, and to test it in the right manner, I fired up a game of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and proceeded to have quicker turns, aiming down of gun-sights, and more kills as a result. It’s definitely better than using the trackpad on a laptop; that’s for sure. As for the build quality, I was expecting more (the entire mouse is built out of plastic, no rubber here dudes) but it still is extremely comfortable to use, and the buttons have the perfect amount of click to them.

A full review will be posted in the coming week, but in the meantime, feel free to gaze longingly at the unboxing while I program the buttons to do my bidding.

Exclusive: Sprint “4G” Turned On In Miami, But Very Spotty

This turns out to be quite a surprise on my end. As a few of you may know (mainly because I hardly ever spoke about this) but when at the Samsung Continuum launch event, I had the chance to meet quite a few prominent bloggers, get some contacts, and meet my Samsung agents. After at least a month, I’ll be returning the Epic 4G review unit they loaned me, but not without using 4G a bit more. We agreed, and now it’s my turn to return the device (next week).

But here’s the interesting part: Sprint 4G is due in Miami sometimes this year, but I just was using it for the last 30 minutes, seen above as the first two tests, reaching speeds of 6MBps and up downloads. This I definitely didn’t expect, and Sprint hasn’t been talking about 4G in Miami anytime soon this week, but “later this year”.

While I did run 2 tests (which are seen above), the “4G” offered by WiMAX is extremely spotty, with connections appearing a few feet from each other, but when connected, are extremely fast. I’ve contacted Sprint to ask them if they’re about to roll the 4G outwards right now, since it’s completely operational on my end. One more photo of Sprint 4G running in Miami on an Epic 4G is after the break.
