Google posts Android Design guidelines for Ice Cream Sandwich

Google has made a rock-solid rule: future Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich devices will be uniform in software design. Things like the typography, color palettes, and other stylistic advice, as well as a breakdown of the components making up the Android UI will all be posted to the new Android Design website, available for app developers and manufacturers. Over time, the site will become even more featured, so there will always be new ideas for design, all originating from Google.

Apple ‘Education Event’ planned for January 19th in NYC

Apple holding a press event in New York City? You don’t hear about that often. There will be a focus on education, since it is dubbed the “education event”. It will take place at the Guggenheim Museum on January 19th starting at 10:00AM EST, and I’ll be bringing updates as the event moves along.

Intriguing: Google States All Android 4.0 With Market Devices Require ‘Holo’ Theme

Finally, Android devices will be sporting some sort of uniform other than their touch sensitive buttons. What this actually means is that the default ‘Holo’ theme that Android 4.0 uses will be required in all devices that have access to the Android Market. This meaning that Touchwiz, Sense UI, and Motoblur will have to curve their appearances to fit the feeling of the UI, and 3rd-party app developers have the option of designing their apps in Holo style or the style of the manufacturers.

Google’s move doesn’t kill the skinning of Android devices completely, but it allows for the real light of Android’s design to shine through consistently for once, even if it’s only a set of widgets and design elements. Via: Google

Remember The Official Windows Phone Unlock Tool? It’s Been Killed, At Least For Now

It turns out that the WP7Chevron team was allowed only to sell 10,000 tokens at $9 each to unlock Windows Phone 7 devices for modifications. ChevronWP7 spokesperson Rafael Rivera wrote, “Microsoft isn’t involved in our discussion yet. And they can’t provide us with more unlocks because we haven’t asked yet. If we do request more, we’re sure Microsoft will respond positively – as they have in the past.” So if you weren’t able to get your unlock token, then your only alternative now is a $99 official Microsoft unlock. Not appealing, indeed.

Apple’s Great Designer, Johnathan Ive, Is Now A Knight Per The United Kingdom

It’s no longer Johnny Ive (or Jonathan Ive), but Sir Jonathan Ive. You see, every fan of great consumer device design knows that Mr. Ive has had some of the greatest industrial designs for computing devices the world has ever seen.  As such, he has been accepted for knighthood in the United Kingdom, reports the BBC. And as such, Jonathan Ive’s official title is Knight Commander of the British Empire (KBE). Congratulations, sir. Via: 9to5Mac

Verizon drops $2 convenience fee, customers rejoice silently

It marks a win for Verizon’s customers: their $2 “convenience fee”, (which isn’t entirely convenient if people don’t like it) has been dropped, not only due to customer feedback, but like an angry German Shepherd dog, the FCC has begun growling in a most familiar manner. An FCC official states that, ”on behalf of American consumers, we’re concerned about Verizon’s actions and are looking into the matter.” If the new policy is allowed to go live on January 15th, then customers will have to pay this additional fee to pay their bill over the phone or online. How inconvenient!

But since according to VZW’s press release, seen after the break, it’s been scrapped. So that’s good.

Android Saw 3.7 Million Jolly Activations Over The Christmas Period

It may not be earth-shattering numbers, but Andy Rubin and the rest of the Android team members must be happy to hear that 3.7 million new activations occurred during the Christmas period this year (Christmas Eve and Christmas Day). This comes as very jolly news, as Android currently sees at least 700,000 new activations on a daily basis.

On the flipside, analytic firm Flurry published some more stats:  6.8 million new iOS and Android devices went live on Sunday (Christmas Day). App downloads also exceeded any previously known levels for the year, jumping to 242 million on the 25th. Good times. Via: Andy Rubin (Twitter), Flurry

Introducing Rage Faces For Facebook Chat — A Trollface Keeps The Doc Away

I don’t know who in their right mind would do something, so, so, so — awesomesauce. You see, it has been the dream of a fantastic troll, such as myself, to be able to express my feelings via a “trollface” or a “MeGusta” face. Thanks to some first-class geeks , my dream is now a reality. The applications of these codes are ingenious — in fact if you possessed the right username and codes, you could shrink just about any image (including your profile pic) and throw them into the Facebook Chat box. The codes for the faces are as follows:

Poker face [[129627277060203]]
Forever Alone [[227644903931785]]
OK guy [[100002752520227]]
Me Gusta [[164413893600463]]
Lol guy [[189637151067601]]
F**k Yeah [[105387672833401]]
Problem? [[171108522930776]]
[[218595638164996]]

Enjoy and Happy Holidays!
