Dell Streak on AT&T review

The Dell Streak — early name the Dell Mini 5 — has had its release with a ton of press coverage. One reason being that it was Dell’s first go at an Android tablet. Two, for the sake of it, it is an actually good looking Android tablet. A 5-inch WVGA screen with Gorilla Glass, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 5 megapixel camera on the back with a VGA front-facing, Wi-Fi/3G HSPA+/Bluetooth combo, a user-replaceable battery, along with a 16GB microSD card in our review unit which we tortured with tests for over the course of a week.

So how did the 5-inch Dell Streak Android 1.6 tablet fare?

The Dell Streak Goes Downtown — In A Teardown

So the Dell Streak has gone to meet its demise. Its transformation to the dark side of technology. To a site called iFixit, where they do anything but “fix” things on a daily basis.

Cut the drama short, and the Dell Streak was dismantled to every last bit. The team at iFixit declared that the Streak truly has a 1GHz Snapdragon, a 5 megapixel camera that “closely resembles” the iPhone 4’s, Gorilla Glass, and a 2 GB non-user accessible micro-SD card. On a sort of interesting scale of 1 to 10, 8 is the rating given to the Streak. This meaning that on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the easiest), the Streak is an 8 to dismantle for a ‘regular’ user.

Check out the carnage at the source link, and don’t forget to check out our unboxing of the Streak, and wait for the review!

Dell Streak unboxing!

So the Dell Streak arrived in the LaptopMemo office today, a week late.

At least it’s finally here, and so far I have this to say about it: it’ll struggle to find its place, much like Apple’s iPad, but it’s still a winner. So far the 1GHz Snapdragon never has given me a single pout, freeze, or whatever you’d want to call “lag”. The front-facing camera is VGA quality, but it’s still a front-facing camera (hey iPad!), the 5 megapixel on the back could’ve been better, and Android 1.6 doesn’t allow all the features of 2.2 (duh!), but there’s still great multitouch in the browser (it’s freaky fast), Google Maps Navigation, and the Android 1.6 version of Android Market.

The custom Dell UI is actually one of the few pleasant custom skins I’ve seen on Android, besides HTC’s Sense. Expect the review to come up later this week, complete with video and the full review.

For now, check out the unboxing pics, after the cut!

Dell Streak goes on pre-sale — sort of, plus has a cool deal

The Dell Streak, with a release of “late July”, as according to the teaser page, is on that type of emailing list where you are informed of it coming out, then you’ll receive free 2nd business day shipping, along with with “an exclusive coupon code for a 99¢ Plantronics Bluetooth Headset.” Interestingly, the cool deal doesn’t sound bad, and the second Dell source link leads you to the new product page, full of awesome press photos and features on the Dell Streak.

Dell Inspiron R Series Launches, Brings Plenty Of Style On Low Costs

The Dell Inspiron R series are probably the most excited Dell systems that have ever gotten me excited since the Studio XPS and the Alienware M11x. Starting off at your options, the Dell Inspiron R series is very back-to-school (and even more than that). All 3 units – the 14R, 15R and 17R – come in much better build materials than used in the original Inspiron line (which in this case is metal), have Core i CPUs, and supports Intel’s Wireless Display tech, which allows you to basically extend your screen to a TV or monitor without any cables. and the starter model starts at $449. Nice.

While the bezel and lids are glossy, just as I thought they might be, the magnesium alloy chassis is built to last. And believe me, I’ve owned Dells that were built of magnesium alloy, and they didn’t take drops to lightly. They took it, and kept on working. In all of the laptops, there’s options for Core i3 or Core i5 CPUs, 1GB discrete ATI graphics, up to 640GB of hard drive space, up to 6GB of RAM (max 8GB), and optional HD resolution displays; all available in the nicely named colors Mars Black, Peacock Blue, Tomato Red and Lotus Pink. A review for one of these bad guys will hopefully be scheduled sometimes this month.

Alienware updates the M11x to Core i5/i7 and NVIDIA Optimus chips

The Alienware M11x, by far the most powerful “netbook” ever (our thoughts on it is in our review here) has just gotten a fair update: that option, starting at $$949.99 to have a Core i5 chip installed, instead of an overclocked 1.73 GHz Core 2 Duo found in the older $799 model. You can also make more upgrade and buy yourself a Core i7, up to 8GB of RAM (getting 4GB of the DDR3 is a must), a 250GB to 500GB 7,200 rpm drive, or the 256GB SSD option. But due to the NVIDIA Optimus chip being installed, Alienware had to give the boot to one of the ports (USB, HDMI, DisplayPort, media card reader, etc. are still there), but VGA had to go. So, you can’t make a direct VGA connection from the M11x, but you can now have your dream gaming machine for no more than $1,200 bucks (the price of our previous config, but now with Core i5).

Alienware M11x Review: The Light Powerhouse War Begins

The Alienware M11x is one heck of a beast. It grunts, runs, and speaks Alien(ware). After getting it from our local friendly FedexMan a day before my trip to New York for pre-SSAT math preparation with Dad, and some sightseeing, I was able to pull off as many tests needed to say one thing: it’s awesome. But what makes the M11x awesome? Read on after the jump!

Dell Streak will go for $500 unlocked in the US-of-A, starting July

The Dell Streak, everybody’s favorite over-hyped Android tablet with a 5-inch WVGA screen, 5 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS, 16GB of internal memory, 7.2Mbps HSDPA, and the usual 1GHz Snapdragon processor with Android 2.1, and a Dell-influenced UI. Call us crazy, but when this ships in July as according to Dell at the All Things Digital Conference (D8, for short), the tablet will be sold on their website, which I shall buy.

Maybe.

Developing story…
