More Blackberry Slider Pics Leak Out

By Stefan Etienne Filed under: Blackberry, Handsets, Rumors   at: 9:33 pm Leave a Comment »

Remember the Blackberry Slider from not too long ago? In the nick of time BBLeaks has gotten some higher-resolution photos, so we can see the “Slider” on the right in better detail. The size difference between itself and a Curve 8900 isn’t that much. So far as it stands, this slider is an early hardware unit, and surely not the final version. Close-up shot after the jump.

What you’re looking at above is believed to be an authentic shot of the upcoming Palm Pre-like Blackberry slider that I mentioned not too long ago. According to BBLeaks, this slider is the real deal, and they’re getting more pictures and video as we speak. And you know what? I was excited at the idea of a slider Blackberry, but from the looks of that thing up there, that is probably one of the ugliest phones to date. That would be my opinion and sense of disappointment in RIM if it was in fact real. In fact, for the first time I’m hoping that a really good leak is fake.

And I think it’s 100% legit. Gulp. UPDATE: Kevin at CrackBerry doesn’t think the same way I do, and thinks that the above handset is simply another prototype that is scrapped, meaning that it shares the same fate as the Magnum. But no blog is really sure, so we’ll just have to wait on this one.

While we might have been waiting for the 9-inch DR-950, at least we got the DR-900 announced at CeBIT in Germany, a 9-inch eBook reader with Wi-Fi and a 3G option, as well as a purported battery life of 10,000 eBook pages. It also includes a 1024 x 768 resolution on a Sipix panel, making it better than e-ink, 3.5 mm headset jack, support for PDF, TXT, MP3, and ePUB files, and an included 4GB of storage. No price or release date yet, but so far it looks pretty good. Now where’s the ebook store for this thing ASUS? Remember no e-reader in the U.S will succeed if it doesn’t have a bookstore of some sort, like the Nooks, or the Kindles of this world, otherwise, we can pretty much end this here, right now.

If you’re wondering what that Blackberry Storm is running (a Storm2 actually), you couldn’t really say. The above slide was part of a “Super Apps” webinar for developers last week, and RIM’s explanation for the above rendering is that it’s a mockup, and does not indicate anything that might come in Blackberry OS 6.0 (or whatever it might be called). Although from what RIM is projecting for future Blackberries running newer OSes, all of those widgets make Android look awfully jealous, doesn’t it? Hey RIM, that could go into 6.0.

What you’re looking at above is what Boy Genius calls the upcoming Blackberry slider. There’s no confirmation if this is real, so get your tin foil hats on. Moving along, this QWERTY slider wouldn’t slide out horizontally like many of HTC’s phones and the Motorola Droid, but would slide out vertically, exactly like Palm’s Pre. There’s no word if it would be exactly like the Magnum/Dakota prototypes which had a touchscreen and a keyboard, meaning that it might get the keyboard but no touchscreen, but we believe it will have a fully capacitive touchscreen. Otherwise here are the specs that are rumored for this device:

  • It will run Blackberry OS 6.0.
  • It will “100 percent support  802.11n Wi-Fi”.
  • The resolution, unfortunately, has not increased, and will stay at 360×480.
  • It will have a Bold-like keyboard and slides out like the Pre.
  • And lastly, it won’t be a Verizon exclusive — instead it’s a GSM/HSPA device.

But besides the question if this actually exists, the more important question is: Would you actually buy a Palm Pre-like Blackberry with a new OS (hopefully with a better browser), that uses GSM, and looks like a Photoshop of a Bold and Storm 9520 getting fused? In my opinion: Maybe.

BlackBerry Storm2 9550 Review

By Stefan Etienne Filed under: Blackberry, Handsets, Reviews, Verizon   at: 2:37 pm 2 Comments »

Say the word “Blackberry”. The first thing that comes to mind is an elegant young man walking around New York City with his briefcase, sleek and expensive suit, and his – Blackberry Storm2. The Storm2 improves upon the mistakes of the original Storm, while still retaining its good looks, great network, and reasonable price. The look and feel of the Storm2 is a nearly well-crafted experience;  a strong presence, but not intimidating. In simpler words, it has enough solid features to make it the “flagship” BlackBerry. In-depth review after the break. Oh, and better late then never, right? We’ve finally reviewed a Blackberry.

There wasn’t much we were expecting from RIM, but today we’ve been proven wrong. Today co-CEO , Mike Lazaridis, and Director of Developer Relations gave us a sneak peek of what a future web browser on a BlackBerry might look like. Which is impressive; the browser had a score of 100/100 on the Acid3 Test. Hopefully that was real and not a phony, but you can decide that for yourself in the video embedded for you after the break. For those of you who are angered by RIM’s neglect to accurate Gmail syncing, be angry no more. BIS 3.0 will be rolled out to Blackberries according to when your carrier actually issues the update. Soon all Gmail will correctly sync read and unread mail. Finally.

The new update will also add support for Windows Media Audio attachments as well as OpenOffice documents, as well as a reconfigured email setup, which is also more secure. Another feature is more accurate (again) error messages that will direct users to their carrier with contact info. Nice.

So long Blackberry Curve 8900! It was nice knowing that you existed. I’m sure a lot of people liked you. But now it’s time for you to leave. And good riddance, we need more new smartphones! So enjoy your retirement home 8900, and don’t even bother coming out of it again. Now where’s that cousin of yours, the Tour2?

That leaked image from not too long ago didn’t describe how great the marriage of a touchscreen and keyboard enabled Blackberry could be. A fusion like that, on the Blackberry, makes a super BB. In the video after the cut, the Magnum is put up against the 9700 and the 9000. Major new features include a larger keyboard, optical trackpad and micro USB port. Hopefully at the Mobile World Congress the Magnum will become an actual product. [Via The Celluar Guru]
