RIM Just Lost $1.7 Million Worth of PlayBooks

So, if the PlayBook crisis can’t get any worse for RIM, and that the Playbook is also marked-down several hundred dollars, now some thieves have stolen $1.7 million worth of them, in Indiana. The total amount of units stolen is purportedly 5,000. Yikes. The very sad part is that even the thieves will have a hard time selling a tablet no one wants. At least it’s a few extra tablets RIM doesn’t have to worry about. Via: The Verge

Mystery BlackBerry Bold 9980 Surfaces, Seems To Be Luxury Limited Edition

This is one of the most beautiful smartphones I’ve ever seen. It’s sleek, it’s well sculpted, and for some reason unbeknownst to me (and nearly every other blogger/journalist), it’s a BlackBerry “9980″. It contains most of the specs seen in BlackBerry devices like the Bold 9900, which just recently went on sale in the United Sates. This device (and its design) seems to have originated in Beijing, and its creator reportedly has already sold three of these prototypes, which is interesting.

On top of all of this mystery, it may come to the market as a limited edition or luxury version of the Bold 9900. However or wherever it will debut, it’s so awesome looking. Via: CrackBerry

RIM Announces The New BB7 Curve Line: The 9350, 9360, And 9370

RIM sent out a new line of BlackBerry Bolds this summer and now they’ll take care of the entry-level Curve line for consumers still interested in the BlackBerry. All of the new Curves use the new and improved BlackBerry 7 OS along with that great new web browser — though hopefully not priced like the new Bold line, which is fairly absurd if you think about it.

All of the new BB7 Curves have .43-inch depth, a 5-megapixel camera, 512MB of RAM, an 800MHz processor, NFC, and a smallish 2.44-inch 480 x 360 display. The differences include the highest-end Curve 9370, with CDMA/EVDO, Quad-Band Edge support and 1GB of storage. Second is the Curve 9360, as the GSM variant, offering Tri-Band UMTS and Quad-Band Edge, with storage of merely 512MB. Lastly, the 9350 is simply a CDMA variant destined for Verizon and/or Sprint (with the same 512MB storage), much like the 9360 is destined for AT&T and T-Mobile. Hopefully things can go well for RIM, since a decent competitor just called it quits.

BlackBerry Bold 9900 For T-Mobile Priced At $299 On August 31st — Yup, Crazy

It’s really great what RIM is trying here. Freshen up their Bold lie with you know, modern technology. The Bold 9900 is going to use a 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, 768MB RAM, 8GB of internal storage (only 188MB for apps), a 2.8-inch touchscreen with 640×480 resolution, uses HSPA+ data speeds of up to 14MBps, the new BlackBerry 7 OS, and a 5 megapixel camera (no autofocus) with 720p HD video recording. So, technically they have some great specs, but miss in the storage and imaging areas (among a few other smaller things).

But now that almost every carrier is charging $249 for a Bold 9900/9930 makes it look pretty bad. And now T-Mobile is making it worse. To snatch a Bold 9900 on T-Mobile this August 31st, you’ll need to shed $299 on a 2-year agreement, with $50 mail-in rebate. Excuse me, T-Mobile, but that’s just not very intelligent (for lack of a better word) of you. PR after the cut.

Uh, well, err, if you were, then I’ll kindly let you know that the Bold 9930 will be headed to Sprint for $250 on a 2-year agreement on August 21st, the same day that the full-touchscreen Torch 9850, which is the successor to the less than stellar Storm line will be sold for $150 on contract — after a $50 mail-in rebate. BlackBerry Bold 9930 Now Available On Verizon Wireless!

In the light of all the epic news this morning, the best BlackBerry smartphone to date, the 9900/9930 is now available on Verizon Wireless, complete with a 2.8-inch, 640×480 VGA touchscreen, 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor and .41-inch thickness, and with BlackBerry 7 OS. Apparently, since this does seem like a decent refresh for RIM fans, things should go pretty well — that is of course, if you ignore all of those Droids. Via: Verizon Wireless

RIM Debuts Three New BlackBerries: The Torch 9810 And Torch 9850/9860

Now here’s the problem: RIM may have just announced three new BlackBerry smartphones, but none of them run QNX, and all of them have some sort of ties to old models. However, let’s look past the negativity and just jump to some of the specs.

The Torch 9810 could be deemed the Torch 2 in many cases — AT&T will be carrying a “4G” model of it very soon, which will include a 1.2GHz Snapdragon, HSPA+ speeds up to 14.4MBps, has 8GB of storage, and can record 720pHD with its 5 megapixel camera. Following the Torch 2, the Torch 9850/9860, the latter two of which are simply GSM and CDMA variants of the new same full-touchscreen BlackBerry. Each Torch 9850/9860 has a 3.7-inch, 480 x 800 display, 1.2 GHz Snapdragon processor with Liquid Graphics, and a 5 megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording. All three of the smartphones run BlackBerry 7, and in the coming weeks and months will launch in 225 carriers around the world. Let’s see if RIM can pull off one, final charge to stay relevant in a smartphone industry mainly focused on iOS, Android, and Windows Phone 7. Press release after the break.

Awkward: RIM Replies Anonymously To Open Letter By “High-Level” Anonymous Employee

If things couldn’t get worse for RIM than its falling stock, execs losing income, software flops, managerial crisis (as seen from the outside) and overall disapproval of their products, then it’s the open letter sent to BGR this morning regarding a long and candid look at where and how bad the company’s current status is, purportedly all written by a high-level employee who has been verified as an actual employee, but not to the point of a name or title.

On the other side, RIM published a blog post today in response to the letter — without anyone in the byline. Just another anonymous. Awkward. However, it’s good enough to know that despite all the negativity around the BlackBerry RIM is still up to responding to some of it.
