Introducing Motorola DEFY: The Waterproof Phone That Isn’t Waterproof

The Motorola DEFY has its name and marketing for one reason: it can defy almost anything. I’ve had a unit with me from Motorola for about 24 hours, and I can say the following: Scratch proof? Check. Dust proof? Check. Waterproof? Almost.

The Motorola DEFY is also a waterproof phone running Android 2.1 with a newer edition of MOTOBLUR. After thanks and speaking to my Motorola contact, I mentioned that I wanted to take a swim with it in the pool downstairs (that a few of you might have seen in a recent tweet of mine). The deepest the pools are is 6 feet, so it’s decent. When I presented this “test” to my contact, I was told that it would be a great way of testing the Motorola DEFY’s prowess to the elements.

So obviously, since I was given the “OK, go”, I stepped out and walked from one side of the pool to the other, occasionally dipping the DEFY into the water. After checking it once, I found that it was indeed waterproof. So I could get cocky, right? I opened the camera app, switched to video, and played like a child with a rubber ducky in the pool.

Success: it was still functioning. For now.

Since I had originally told my contact that “I’ll take a swim”, then common-sense could only say that I’d go underwater with the DEFY. And so I did. Turns out, the Defy really was waterproof. After having my fun for 5 minutes, I settled the Defy on the ground (since it’s scratch-proof) and called it quits.

7 minutes into my visit to the pool.

And it froze. Trying to unlock the Defy was unsuccessful, so like any true tech blogger I didn’t panic and removed the very secure battery cover, which has a lock switch to keep water out. Everything was dry and factory fresh, so I removed the battery. Re-inserted, powered on, and all looked well. But still, it wouldn’t react to my touch. Currently the Defy is air drying, and now bits of perspiration can be seen at the top corners of the screen.

I’ll report back to see if the Defy really is in fact, not as advertised, to put it lightly.

Update: So far, no go. It’s been 12 hours and this Defy isn’t functioning. And before you ask: all flaps to ensure water-resistance were closed, refer to my unboxing of it to see the flaps properly closed.

Clearly stated on the box WATER RESISTANT! not waterproof

I think "water resistant" is quite different from "waterproof". Box says "water resistant"... normal use, during rain, drop accidentally water or something else, etc...

dn drectly open d bck cover after frm water...;)

Look, theres some rules with its waterproofness... I HAVE definitely put it to the test.. in the shower.. in the bathtub (filled with water), sink, mud, river, even BEER! Here are the rules I follow: 1. Immediately after it comes out from exposure, turn off screen and dry 2. make sure the screen is dry... all the way (it is a capacitive screen, which means the water residue on the screen can trick your phone into thinking your touching that part) 3. unlock it and go I also had moisture in the phone itself, but it went away after a couple of days... so yeah

Excellent post! From my personnal experience, I agree with your imformation.

I am fuming not really scratch resistant either 20 minutes in my bag next to me keys and my phone has a huge scratch down the screen. It hasn't been misstreated or abused in anyway just normal use.

Its not waterproof its water resistant. It clearly says it on the box.

You should've read the user manual before operating any electronics.

As advertised the phone is water proof up to 1 meter (3 feet)....not sure why your contact told you to swim in 6 feet deep water. Its not designed for that.

Really interesting. Does it mean it's not waterproof? Shame. I'm looking forward to updates.
