So the time has finally come for a new entry in the endless world of Twitter apps for Android, eh? Tweetdeck for Android has had tons of user requests for an official release, and today the leaked official beta (or alpha build?) is available as an .apk file to upload to your Android handset. In this review, I’m using an original Motorola DROID running Android 2.2 FroYo. Read on to figure out what’s good (and not so good), about this very early build of Tweetdeck for Android.
The User Interface Is…
Extremely polished. You have the same columns UI as the desktop client, but normal homescreen-like swipes bring you to each respective column. That includes Home for all of your tweets, mentions, and direct messages. The only fault I find in the most-used parts of the UI is that test is a tad bit too large, but for presentation, it’s a nice touch to the rest of the UI.
Google Maps And Location Integration
The Tweetdeck for Android app supports full Foursquare integration, and allows you to tap on one of the four main UI buttons to gain access to a map of your location (using Google Maps in an iframe of sorts).
Pressing the menu buttons gives you options to tweet from your location, use Foursquare, or check-in. Although this is a nifty feature, it (the app) continues crashing on the first stage of the location section, so let’s blame this on early builds…
Rest Of The App Is Just…Great?
Calling this an iOS 4 app (sorry Android fanboys) is more or less an understatement. Due to me getting all sorts of tips regarding this build as an extremely early one, I’ll lay off the talking, and give you guys a few shorts words to gawk at.
At the time of its official release, Tweetdeck will be my main Android app for Twitter. And that’s saying something, considering Twitter’s official Android app is top-notch to start with.
