LaptopMemo Holiday Gift Guide 2009: Netbooks

As much of us hate the word netbook — low-powered, slow, tiny screens, and cramped keyboards, they’re so popular in stores (and budget buyers) it could be the next revolution. Which is why  they’re showing up in Part 3 of the “Gift Guide 2009″. There will be Acer and Asus netbooks added, but not now.  Drumroll please! UPDATE: ASUS netbook added!

The Perfect Gift…

HP Mini 311

An example of how the regular netbook should be. For $399 you get 11.6-inch screen, 1.6 Ghz Intel Atom, 1GB of DDR3 RAM, 160GB of hard drive space, and the best thing about the 311 is: the Nvidia Ion chip which is powerful enough to play games like World of Warcraft and even a bit of HD video. Buy it here from HP.

Main Features:

  • Nvidia Ion chip
  • The $399 ticket price
  • Good keyboard and screen
  • 1GB of DDR3 RAM
  • Great styling

Dell Mini 10v

I’m not suggesting this gift as an under-powered XP (or Ubuntu if you dare) netbook. Not at all. Remember you can Hackintosh this to run Snow Leopard. Exactly. It’s cheap, thin, light, and has a pretty decent 10.1 inch glossy display. Buy it from Dell here.

Main Features:

  • Starts at $299
  • Weighs only 2.5 lbs
  • Comes in a million colors
  • 160 GB HDD basic
  • You can Hackintosh it, remember?

Toshiba NB205

toshiba-nb205-n310-brown-cover-4501If you’re asking: What’s one of the most well received netbooks of the year? Then here’s the answer: the Toshiba NB205. Well priced at $399,  great keyboard, trackpad, and battery life make this one of the best bets for the holidays. Buy it from Toshiba here, or search for it at $330.

Main Features:

  • It’s well received all-around
  • It’s great in everything – keyboard, trackpad, and battery life
  • Priced perfectly
  • It’s Toshiba (they have the least PC failures on the market right now)

ASUS Eee PC 1101HA Seashell

asusSince ASUS started the netbook revolution, it makes sense to feature their Eee PC netbook in here. Complete with all the essential netbook needs, this could be a great buy. (But I’d still get a Lenovo S12. Just saying.) Buy it here from ASUS at $429.99.

Main Features:

  • 9 hours of battery life (11 with extended battery)
  • 11.6-inch screen
  • Intel Atom running at 1.2 Ghz
  • 1GB DDR2 RAM
  • 160GB Hard Drive (5400 rpm)
  • Windows XP
  • Size: 11.25” x 7.7” x 1.43” and 3.04 pounds

It’s getting pricey now…

Nokia Booklet 3G

booklet-3g-gg-1You probably have an old  and beat-up Nokia phone sitting somewhere, don’t you? Well here’s Nokia’s first laptop priced at the high-en netbook price of $599 or you can become AT&T’s bank and get it on a 2-year contract for $299. Get it from BestBuy here or from AT&T.

Main Features:

  • It’s expensive (yes, that’s a feature)
  • It’s thin
  • It’s Nokia (snicker).
  • 3 color choices: Blue, Black, or White

Lenovo Ideapad S12

lenovo-s12-gg-1This is probably one of the most powerful netbooks we’ve seen, it has an Ion graphics card just like the Mini 311. It even has Window 7 Home Premium, so don’t consider this a “netbook”. You can also not consider the price is of a netbook either, it’s $599, but it’s worth it. But it from Lenovo here.

Main Features:

  • It has an Ion chip!
  • Windows 7, not XP!
  • It looks great!
  • It’s powerful enough to cause excessive use of exclamation points!

Sony VAIO X Series

sony-vaio-x-opened-1259090009If your question is what’s the king of all netbooks, then here’s the netbook that pushes the meaning of that definition and your wallet. The Sony VAIO X Series is enclosed by a crazy thin carbon fibre case, 2.0 GHz Atom processor, the amazing 10 hours+ battery life and the jawdropping “netbook” price of $1300. Consider this the “netbook” you would buy if you’re part of Wall Street, okay? Buy it from SonyStyle here.

Main Features:

  • Its weight is 1.5 pounds
  • 2.0 Ghz Intel Atom CPU
  • 2GB of DDR3 RAM
  • 11.1 inch display
  • Outstanding battery life
  • All for the price of $1299

Next up in the Gift Guide is: gaming. Yes gaming. Who wouldn’t want to know which console to buy for Christmas?
